Ahoy
can't remember if i commented on this during the challenge, so I'll endevour to do so now.
This is an excellent piece, the expression captured on the soldiers face is genius, he looks like a man with a lot on his plate!
Excellent entry mate, good luck with it...
Wonderful piece! i love all the subtleties of colors in everything, especially the face, and he looks very tired. Great Job!

Hmm.. I was just wondering... how the dogs are servants to the man? I mean, they can feth stuff but are they really servants to anyone? I guess a servant is someone who is aware of who they are, don't you think?
Apart from that a very nice piece though the mans face could be a little less blurry ;)

There is so much Rembrandt in this it feels like Frans Banning Cock himself will be recruiting this one shortly. Great work.

Mastery of technique, mastery of composition, mastery of emotions, Mastery of story. I agree with mazz[CHN], this is a masterpiece.
I replied in your M&S thread that this is my overall favorite piece and should be the grand prize winner! It's only fitting that it's front page material!

Really great work man. The thing I like most is the man's expression, specially the eyes(the "fixed in thoughts" expression  ).
Now, to be picky, there's something weird about the right hand, but I can't tell what it is. It may be the perspective, or the placement of the knuckles... The thing to do is to draw over it as if his left hand wasn't there and see where the rest of the fingers end up(I'm trying to imagine the spot where the index finger lies)
Just Pointless critique, This is one of the best drawings I've seen in this site. Great job!

This work is really beautiful!
If I may ask a question, however, why did you choose to make his sword with no hilt? This in no way detracts from your work; I am just asking out of curiosity.
If emotions mean anything in the judging of this challenge, you will win it. This is beautiful beyond words.
It's too bad printing technology can't generate the texture and brushstrokes of traditional paintings, because this is a museum piece if I've ever seen one. Congratulations on raising the bar for CG art.

Composition and story are awesome, technical brilliance. I like the lighting the best.
If i have to make a comment, i would say the dude can be even older, means like a rougher skin, enhance his isolation, but this is more of a personal preference kind of thing, feel free to ignore it!
good job

Thanks everyone. I'm really flattered, so many so very friendly comments.
Casey720 - hey Casey, i didn't use a hilt as i didn't want it to make too western type or something. or too classically medieval. i'm really not sure why but i just thought it will make it bit more "mysterious" or exotic. Thanks a lot
Leigh - hehe, my favourite dogs as well:) thanks
vravro - thanks for the critique. i struggled with the hand a lot. i agree with you totally. You have some good points there. and definetely not useless critique, i really appreciate your comments and will memorise it for sure.
and thanks for the compliment :) very encouraging
Elhaz - heh:) thanks. I actually went through a lot of stages. i repainted the face many times. as i didn't use any reference for it i had a lot of problems with light on it, emotion, age etc etc. and originaly i wanted to make him older than that. but yeah.. because i had to paint it so many times i didn't have enough fuel and time to mess with the face anymore:)
cheers

hi Ant4d
great work, and detail, what I like most is the facial expression, the image has an emotion.
this is something thats hard to find in digital artwork, It has all the qualites of an old master
painting and is something more digital artists should strive for!
Great work

I truely enjoy this piece, I am a huge fan of the Baroque period. I have a feeling that Rembrandt would approve of your work here, except for the lack of impasto, this could be by Rembrandt himself or a great pupil. This also has Caravaggio's influence on it as well, with the dramatic lighting coming from out of composition. The dogs themselves harken to the work of Velasquez, so you've got a modern Baroque amalgam of Dutch, Italian, and Spanish influence.
The dramatic lighting is top notch in execution. Great, great work. Print this to canvas at a large scale. You are an inspiration for me to work harder and do better! Thanks for sharing this work!

Anyway, dude you know what we think about it already and we all love you! Keep going and I would like to ask you to accept my humble congratulations once again! Hard work has really paid its price...
Most images I see on this site are what I consider "factual" images, illustrative almost in their representation of "real things". Rarely have I seen an image such as this, that displays so much more than the obvious.
There's so many things that make this painting wonderful. The little dog at the top so obviously focussed on something, the glint in his eye portraying the mischievous qualities of small dogs. The dog below seems concerned by the mans expression and you can almost hear him asking "what's wrong?".
It's the kind of image that makes me envious of your ability (I am an artist but my ability level is so far behind this) yet thankful that there are people capable of creating this level of imagery, to drive us on and more importantly, to make us feel good.
Thank you for sharing this with us, wonderful.
Hmm.. I was just wondering... how the dogs are servants to the man? I mean, they can feth stuff but are they really servants to anyone? I guess a servant is someone who is aware of who they are, don't you think?
Apart from that a very nice piece though the mans face could be a little less blurry ;)
You presume that the man is the master, for what reason?
The part of a loving pet owner is to look after and provide for your loyal pets, to provide their comforts, their companionship and their essentials to live. If you have a pet, you will understand it's demands/needs and will bow to them without question. You will change your life to fit and make sacrifices for their greater good. You are, to all intents and purposes, their servant.
I don't know if this is what the artist intended and maybe it's just my interpretation based on the importance of pets/animals.
Oh, and I guess the last line was a joke yes?

My guess is that one should not forget the connection what the man is to the "outer" world.
He is a warrior, mighty master about others often. Or if he is a leader, he is a master about other men. Over those who are his followers and those who he has already conquered. And now the dogs, are those masters? And thru that the whole atmosphere gets really interesting and exciting. One can go very deep with it if he wants. But I guess it really is something what is best let for our master itself to explain what he had in his mind while doing this masterpiece.

hehe. Thanks for you comment.I agree with you about the face. i started noticing it too late. after i submitted the final picture.
About the subject. I can't say what dogs think really. So i may be very wrong about this. But i believe that they do take us as a masters, that they do understand quite a lot.. and we are a masters as we are responsible for them, they are like our children but biologically they are not(for most of us:))so we are not parents for them, and very often they do have practical purpose as well(especially centuries ago).you have to feed them, teach them, order them and generally look after them. I have had many dogs in my life. And the best way to describe how i feel about them is to read for example some stuff from Jack London("White fang", "The call of the wild"). I think he had extremely beautiful ideas how those little creatures think.
Cheers
Anton

That is very interesting point of view. I guess everyone has its own ideas. What makes me even more happy. I'm happy that you can see the man as a servant. haha.. thats very good:) And if to concider how much we sacrifice for the pets I guess we are servants for them as well. It really depends how you look at it. For someone dog is just a thing that guards his/her territory and for other it can be the only important thing in the whole world. So who is whose master it is a question..:)
Thanks for your comments. Splin you too:)

nice one! but the rembrandt style hurts this piece way more than it helps. the similarities are so obvious that it's like impossible to not compare this to his works, and he's kind of tough to compete with :) your lighting is better than most people's for sure, i definately like it and mean no offense by this, but it comes off as quite muddy and flat when compared to his stuff. if i could offer any advice it would be to avoid the mid-ranges a bit when you paint. and if you want to make something this close to another artist's work - really really study what it is that makes their style special, not just the imagery. a rembrandt inspired piece simply MUST glow like his stuff does, and i see very little glow here. other than that, it's a fine piece, and congratulations to you. hope i wasn't too harsh, i tried to be constructive anyway :)
