i'm using WIN XP Pro SP2---I have no problems with it at all--I've heard win 2000 may be more stable but I didn't notice any difference when i tried it...so i'd reccommend xp pro SP2 (stay away from xp home edition---it's crap)

To get some speed improvement or try to fix any incompatibility issues with XP, you can run an application in "Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode". Open the properties for the shortcut to your app, you'll find it there. The most obvious change is the lack of the fancy window graphics, but there are most likely other differences as well.

Best performance -> W2k then XP, and get rid of norton antivirus and personal firewall if you have any...

I'm using it with WinXP Pro SP2 ... and I had something about 8 crashes over nearls 2 years.
I think thats acceptable. Especially because my hardware is quite crappy  .

Linux baby. ;)

My experience with Maya and XP was, well, it's about as stable as your XP installation. If you run Maya in Windows 2000 Compatibility mode as mentioned above, then it runs quite well. If you want, as you put it, maximum hardware, then go with XP. It will have the best support for the latest drivers and applications (or is that vice-versa? hm.)
