Hi!
I tried to fake an object- light, by using these connections:

Sadly that didnt work.
Do you have an idea what went wrong and if this is generally possible with such a setup?
I know there is this plugin or so for MR, but we want to use the Softwarerenderer....

Well mental ray would be the best choice. Not to mention its faster than maya's sofware renderer(without using Final Gather or Global illumination). But if you must go with Maya, search for jeLightScripts.mel v1.0 (http://highend3d.com/files/dl.3d?group=melscripts&file_loc=jeLightScripts-v1.0-.mel&file_id=3162) on highend3d. It contains a script called jePolyFaceLight, which basically contraints several lights to the vertexs of you geometry. Also search for ObjectLights v1.0 (http://highend3d.com/files/dl.3d?group=melscripts&file_loc=ObjectLights-v1.0-.mel&file_id=1484) Its a similar one.

Yes i knew about all that(MR, jeLightScripts.mel v1.0 (http://highend3d.com/files/dl.3d?group=melscripts&file_loc=jeLightScripts-v1.0-.mel&file_id=3162) ) but they dont wanna use all that.
Dont ask me how, MR( maybe just a pass) would be my choice as well...
Anyway thanks, seems that there is no solution...doesnt matter that much i think...

Thats an interesting idea.
After a couple of minutes I came up with this gimmick via software render.

Not sure if this is what you are going for.

What I did was create a primitive and a point light, parent the light to the geo, then I connected the incandescence of a lambert material to the color slot of a point light with ray-traced shadows. Turn up the transparency of the lambert a tad, set up the color of your incandesence and be done like the sun....

If you can add to this or have a better method then chime in please.

[edit]
Make sure you turn off casts shadows for the geo. :)
