Is there a way to copy an IPO and paste it elsewhere as an instance?

Keep in mind that a copy and an instance are not the same.

The copy is identical to the original object at the time is was copied, but is independent of the original.
An instance is dependent of the original, and any change made to the original or to the instance affects the other one.

That been said, you can have both in Blender. Search at the bottom of the IPO edidor window, there you will find a dropdown list with all the IPO names. If you select the name of an already created IPO, then both object will use it as an instance.

Right next to the drop-down list is a "Single User" button, that creates a true non-instanced copy of the selected IPO.

Thank you. Yeah, I meant instance == dependent copy. That was the whole point.
However, the system is not as flexible as I hoped. You can't, for example, paste an instance of a location curve to an RVK channel. You can do such things easily in 3ds max as long as the type of controller is the same.
