Hello,
bought myself Maya 4 Fundamentals the other day and think its very resourceful. Many movies on the cd to run through. A person cant go wrong with this book. Mr. Gooding the narrator of some of the tutorials got tongue tied a few times but like fine wine he was better in time.
I also have bought and read through the first few chapters of The secrets of the Pro's. And not sure if I wanna write anything bout this book yet.......Updates soon....

only problem with Maya 4 Fundamentals is that it only tells you the VERY basics... the lighting chapter doesn't give you any advanced rendering techniques, and the materials chapter doesn't explain any of the more advanced shading nodes... its a good book for a novice, but at the same time, i think the modeling chapters are WORSE than many of the free tutorials out there... the book doesn't even cover UV texturing or character animation, either... basically it teaches you to make a poly/subD monster, and a flythrough of a nurbs house with path animation and some snazzy paintfx... like i said, good for beginners, but nothing more. the only thing that makes this better than online tuts is the video walkthroughs.
