Ok this really has me frusterated. I've tried looking both here on CGTalk and on Alias' support site and haven't found anything relating to this. I booted up good ol' Maya 6.0.1 the other day for a project and went to render using Mental Ray and its gone. Not in the Render Globals dialog, not in any of the render using context menus. Gone. I've tried Repairing the install twice, nothing. I've tried reinstalling, still not there.

Any advise would be very much apreciated, I have a trouble report into Alias but who knows how long it may take them to follow up. Thanks everyone!

A lot of people seem to have this problem: mayatomr is sometimes unloading when maya crashes. so you have to go in your plugin manager to load it back again.

If you load it and you still have an error, see in your output window for more info.

I had this problem after opening a file with the misss shader ( it was a file I did on another computer) and it seems that it changed my maya.rayrc file...

Anyway I had to edit my maya.rayrc file by replacing this line:

registry "{MAYABASE}" value "<INSTALL DIR>/mentalray" end registry

byt this one
registry "{MAYABASE}" value "C:/Program Files/Alias/Maya6.5/mentalray" end registry

I find that if you close Maya very soon after starting it (like while there're still things going on for initialisation) for whatever reason, it doesn't save what plugins it was set to auto-load. Real pain in the butt. Most likely this is what has happened, so go into Window->Settings / Preferences->Plug-in Manager and find Mayatomr.mll and click that for Auto Load and also Load, then goto file->save preferences and exit.

Thanks, everyone! You really hit the nail on the head, its working perfectly now (much to my relief).
