Someone asked a few very basic Painter questions today, after making it clear he/she is a beginner.
Though I agree with Lunitique's request that the person read the User Guide and the Sticky threads at the top of this forum, those beginner questions were no more "stupid" than some of the questions asked about how to paint that are allowed and encouraged here.
No question is stupid if it's asked siincerely and politely!
Locking the thread was, Lunatique, a good way to discourage people from coming to this forum for help and a good way to make sure I get tired of being here to help.
I find this treatment quite unnecessary. A polite request or suggestion would have been enough and I'm going to answer those beginner questions because when someone is brand new to Painter, they often don't even know enough of the terminology to look things up in the User Guide. We all should be generous enough to give them a boost in the beginning, with appropriate guidance to help them learn how to find things.
Question: Is there an eraser tool in Painter.
No, there is not an eraser tool. All Painter tools are found in the Tools palette where, in this case, the appropriate tool is the Brush tool because Erasers in Painter are brush variants. There is a Painter brush category containing several eraser variants. Look in the Brush Selector bar's Brush Category list and Brush Variant list. If you don't know where the Brush Selector bar is, read the User Guide or from inside Painter, Help > Help Topics.
Question: is there a tool in corel painter like smudge, dodge, burn tool as in Photoshop...
No, there is only the Tool palette's Brush tool used for raster based drawing and painting. Once it's active, you need to find the brush variant you want. Again, look in the Brush Selector bar's Brush Category list to find the Photo and Blenders brush categories, then look in the Brush Variant list for each of these brush categories to find the brush variants you want.
Question: is there a way to delete the Canvas layer that is created with locked when we create a new document...
No. Painter's Canvas cannot be unlocked, deleted, or made transparent.
Question: what's the advantage of Color Mixer tool... in photoshop we can select all the colors that can be created by Color Mixer in Painter... strange to say i could not understand its aim...
Some artists who are accustomed to mixing their traditional media colors like to mix their colors in Painter rather than pick them or use the Color Info palette's RGB sliders to specify colors. Also, there's an advantage using the Artist's Oils brush variants with the Mixer palette as it allows us to mix colors, then use the Sample Multiple Colors dropper to pick more than one color and have those multiple colors all appear in a single brushstroke. You can pick or specify your colors however you like.
Question: When we select an area by the select tool we can delete it by pressing delete in Photoshop but when i did this in Painter i could not do this... why?
Because first, Painter is not Photoshop and, second, you didn't use one of the appropriate methods:
• Ctrl/Command+X
• Edit > Clear
• Click the Backspace key
Question: is there any layer effects in Painter as in Blending options in Photoshop
Yes. Painter's rough equivalent is Composite Methods and the drop down list of options is found at the top left side of the Layers palette. Some Composite Methods are the same as Photoshop's and others are not the same.
NOTE: Before you ask any more questions, take time to read Help > Help Topics. Go to the Contents tab and read the chapters from the top of the list down as they're organized so that the most basic information is included in the first few chapters. Make use of the Index and Search tabs too.
In Painter, also go to the Help menu and click Show Tool Tips (if it says Hide Tool Tips they're already enabled so you don't need to do anything). Then hold your cursor very still for a few seconds over an item on the interface until its name is displayed. That will help you both when looking up information in Help > Help Topics and when asking questions if you are unable to find the answers on your own.
As you can see, if you want help from other artists you'll need to show you're willing to make a serious effort to find information on your own before asking questions. None of us have either the time or the inclination to do basic things for people when they can do them on their own.
When you do make the effort, you'll find most people are more than willing to help.
Happy Studying!
