View Full Version : Beginner Questions

Someone asked a few very basic Painter questions today, after making it clear he/she is a beginner.

Though I agree with Lunitique's request that the person read the User Guide and the Sticky threads at the top of this forum, those beginner questions were no more "stupid" than some of the questions asked about how to paint that are allowed and encouraged here.

No question is stupid if it's asked siincerely and politely!

Locking the thread was, Lunatique, a good way to discourage people from coming to this forum for help and a good way to make sure I get tired of being here to help.

I find this treatment quite unnecessary. A polite request or suggestion would have been enough and I'm going to answer those beginner questions because when someone is brand new to Painter, they often don't even know enough of the terminology to look things up in the User Guide. We all should be generous enough to give them a boost in the beginning, with appropriate guidance to help them learn how to find things.

Question: Is there an eraser tool in Painter.

No, there is not an eraser tool. All Painter tools are found in the Tools palette where, in this case, the appropriate tool is the Brush tool because Erasers in Painter are brush variants. There is a Painter brush category containing several eraser variants. Look in the Brush Selector bar's Brush Category list and Brush Variant list. If you don't know where the Brush Selector bar is, read the User Guide or from inside Painter, Help > Help Topics.

Question: is there a tool in corel painter like smudge, dodge, burn tool as in Photoshop...

No, there is only the Tool palette's Brush tool used for raster based drawing and painting. Once it's active, you need to find the brush variant you want. Again, look in the Brush Selector bar's Brush Category list to find the Photo and Blenders brush categories, then look in the Brush Variant list for each of these brush categories to find the brush variants you want.

Question: is there a way to delete the Canvas layer that is created with locked when we create a new document...

No. Painter's Canvas cannot be unlocked, deleted, or made transparent.

Question: what's the advantage of Color Mixer tool... in photoshop we can select all the colors that can be created by Color Mixer in Painter... strange to say i could not understand its aim...

Some artists who are accustomed to mixing their traditional media colors like to mix their colors in Painter rather than pick them or use the Color Info palette's RGB sliders to specify colors. Also, there's an advantage using the Artist's Oils brush variants with the Mixer palette as it allows us to mix colors, then use the Sample Multiple Colors dropper to pick more than one color and have those multiple colors all appear in a single brushstroke. You can pick or specify your colors however you like.

Question: When we select an area by the select tool we can delete it by pressing delete in Photoshop but when i did this in Painter i could not do this... why?

Because first, Painter is not Photoshop and, second, you didn't use one of the appropriate methods:

• Ctrl/Command+X
• Edit > Clear
• Click the Backspace key

Question: is there any layer effects in Painter as in Blending options in Photoshop

Yes. Painter's rough equivalent is Composite Methods and the drop down list of options is found at the top left side of the Layers palette. Some Composite Methods are the same as Photoshop's and others are not the same.

NOTE: Before you ask any more questions, take time to read Help > Help Topics. Go to the Contents tab and read the chapters from the top of the list down as they're organized so that the most basic information is included in the first few chapters. Make use of the Index and Search tabs too.

In Painter, also go to the Help menu and click Show Tool Tips (if it says Hide Tool Tips they're already enabled so you don't need to do anything). Then hold your cursor very still for a few seconds over an item on the interface until its name is displayed. That will help you both when looking up information in Help > Help Topics and when asking questions if you are unable to find the answers on your own.

As you can see, if you want help from other artists you'll need to show you're willing to make a serious effort to find information on your own before asking questions. None of us have either the time or the inclination to do basic things for people when they can do them on their own.

When you do make the effort, you'll find most people are more than willing to help.

Happy Studying!

I'm still a learner with Painter, I've a long, long way to go before I could say I've got to grips with it properly and I appreciate the time you and others spend to answer questions. Looking back in hindsight some of my early questions regarding Painter were a bit basic also.

I find that most CHM type files (Painter included) are not always easy to find things in. After clicking on a few hyperlinks you can easily veer of at a tangent and loose track of where you are (or at least where you were aiming for). This is especially the case when you are new to graphics type programs and the terminology is all new. I've been painting for years but only started doing anything digital in the last 6 months, terminology is a big issue for me.

I also find that I can gain so much more knowledge about Painter by reading the answers to other peoples questions. Ones that I hadn't even yet thought of asking or trying to find the answers to.

It is of course always good to respect forum guidlines and FAQs so as not to waste anyones valuable time, I always try to find answers in the help files and by searching forums etc before posting.

Hi...

This morning I was playing around with some of preference in Painter (I use version 9 on PC), and all of sudden, I cannot see a single storke when I use Brush.. any brush... Unfortunately, I forgot what I did before it misbehaves...
So I did uninstall the Painter, and reinstalled... Still same problem...
Can anyone give me some advise where I start to fix this problem?

that I erased the brush information somehow... Thing that make me confuse though is I can see brush stroke on Color Mixer window... But none of brushs can make a single storke on Canvas... I checked out all possibilities from trouble shootings from manual, which were (1) Primary color, (2) Opacity, (3) Brush Method, (4) Drawing Mode, (5) Layers...
Eye Dropper is also work fine, it can detact any color...

Brush strke is not visible in Brush creator as well...

Any ideas? Please...

I have a quick question in regards to the artist oils. Is there a way to make it run out of paint while you're painting? I know if you hold down and paint it will run out and then become basically a dry brush that evens things out nicely...but once you pick up your pen and place it back down, it starts over again.

I'd like it to have a true painting feel...to where I have to go back to the pallet to "pick up" and load the brush again with paint...then brush to where there's nothing left. I like to use quick brush stabs after the brush is dry to blend and tweak before loading the brush again.

Is there a way to do this? I mean, it's SO close to the real thing I can taste it!

Thanks.

One thing you can do is is turn down the resaturation(resat) to 0 and you will have a brush like a blender but with no paint, im not sure about making the brush react the way you want it too as that sounds more like a feature, but it would be a nice feature all the same, being able to paint and then blend, only adding more paint when you need it.

I think that's how the palette knife works. Try changing the Expression setting for Resat to Pressure. I'm using version 7, but I imagine it's the same for 9.

I'm also a beginner. And the only tool I have a little experience with is photoshop. My question
is; what's the difference between Painter and Photoshop. And also, there are a lot painting
tools around, so wich one are best to use?

It probably depends on what you will be drawing. A sample of what I draw is
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=2484179#post2484179 and I did this with
photoshop. Can you suggest another tool?

(maybe there are already threads around that answered my questions. If so, my apologies, I
couldn't find them)

Thanks in advance.

Take a look in the Art Techniques and Theories forum, as that's one of the most talked about topic.
