I'm interested in hearing from anyone who is using DF for motion graphics work. It's a bit of an off-beat as you frequently hear eyeon promoting seemless compositing for film and high-end broadcast, but I know there is plenty of people using it for motion graphics too.

I'm also looking very much forward to some insight in this as well!

Currently I'm using AE6.5 for all motion graphics work, and was while ago considering DF, but couldn't find anyone else doing mainly graphics with it...

"Anyone, anyone...? Mr Bueller!"

I spent some time this weekend with DF to 'play around' with motion graphics. The biggest thing I notice between DF and combustion is the way I can work with Paint operators in combustion and animate them in 3D. With DF it's more like knowing tricks to pretend something is moving in 3D, including text. I know F5 will change all of this, but it's a drawkback for now. As a striaght compositing package it's fast and straight forward. I don't know if how much things will slow down once you enable 3D. The background rendering feature is awesome though!

There are some free motion graphcis tutorials at http://www.cmivfx.com (http://www.cmivfx.com/). Click on Tutorials at the drop down menu.

Thanks for the tut tip.

3D is one of the things which is keeping me still an AE user, but F5 might change all that, you never know. Looks very very promising.

But let's see if we can get some examples and stories about DF in motion graphics...

No one? Not even a single one?!?!?

Maybe that's why eyeon is not raving about it that much.

I've been doing 3D animation for over 10 years now running my own company and Fusion has formed the hub of my graphics work and it is amazing! Very fast, handling the multi-layed 3D, 2D, live video, etc, no problem. Helps me break up my project into bite size portions. I'm currently rendering a 30 second sequence for a sports channel using Lightwave + DF + live video + Fractal Painter . . . delivering tomorrow. I have also done visual effects, blue/green screen, virtual sets, comping 3D into live action and the other way round, titles, format changes, varispeed shots, manual rotoscoping, blah blah blah. I'm happy. So happy, that I' haven't had the urge to upgrade since DF2.13. I'm considering DF5 for HD work on 2 projects coming up, one for HDTV, and one for film. Until then, like I said, I'm very happy.

edit: I don't know if the above qualifies as 'motion graphics'. Probably not. I haven't used any other comp softwave before Fusion, unless you count the simple Background & Foreground compositor in Lightwave which I once used to painfully build (keeping many notes and heavy use of a calculator) a many-layered TV station ident package for Television Mozambique (going back a few years).

Though not geared to the masses as a “Motion Graphics” factory. DF/DFX is well geared to doing this as fast as the others.

I use it daily to do many tasks that were PS/AFX ruled at one time.

come from combustion2...
Now, i'm a DF user.
What i can say is Df is fast. extremely powerful.
I can do a lot of tests. Not afraid to change all my effet to reconstruct another and another etc... I'm not working with it, i'm playing with it. it's a cool game.

But for that kind of job, a real 3d environnement is needed. So maybe it's better to wait F5.
In fact, it's pretty easy to simulate 3d environnement with Df's expression.

i'm totally addict, no need of plugins, DF is an fX generator.

Even though DF may not be marketed towards motion graphics, it's more than adequate for it.

The text+ tool is one of those things that at it's basic function generates text. However there is such enormous depth to it, that it would take me months to write tutorials to cover everything.

The particle system also can do some very interesting things for motion graphics....

I think the primary philosophy of DF is what most people coming from the other apps have difficulty with... that is that DF gives you the tools to create great visuals and effects, but doesn't give you a list of preset tools to be locked into.

Working with DF today and really digging deep into the tools. Even though DF isn't 3D so-to-speak, a variety of the tools allow for XYZ rotation. So while DF may not have a 3D world, there are elements that allow for 3D control. That's cool in my book.
