I'm getting ready to build a new computer and am still trying to decide between the MSI NX6600GT-TD128E and PNY Quadro FX540. The 6600gt has opengl 2.0 while fx540 has opengl 1.5. Since the newer geforces can't be softmodded and the price difference is only around $50, can anyone tell me what kind of advantages the fx540 has? or in other words, will I have problems using the 6600gt?

Also... I was gonna get a SLI mobo (ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe to be exact) but after doing some research it seems like SLI is mainly for gaming. I don't do much gaming (none of the HL2 kind). Should I just get a normal mobo or will I have future use for SLI?

I'm a student and do a lot of video compositing and use Maya for 3d.

Thanks a lot!!

hmmmm, i just got a msi 6600gt the other day to reaplace my 5900U and i would have to say that it is running better than the 5900. as for the PNY i dont know bout that man everybody that ive talked to about PNYs hate them their like the cheapest made card and either dont go as fast as another brand or they just break to easily if you can go with another brand. also for SLI i geuss i wouldnt worry bout that now unless you plan on upgraading laters on caues as you can see SLI is going to complety push AGP outa the way and if im right their won t be AGP anymroe. i could be wrong though. also what kind of compositing are you gong to do because i know that the 6600GT doenst have Tv inputs for it.

Thanks for the reply. Do you use the 6600gt for maya? does it have any problems? I don't know if there's any other brand for quadro... at least I didn't see any other than pny. anyone knows?
as for compositing, I use combustion mainly and some ae. I don't really need to worry too much about tv inputs and things like that since I can always use the school lab quickly if I need something I don't have.
anyone else have any comments/suggestions on my questions? I really want to get the config. down soon. Thanks guys

Leadtek make quadros....Run a search on quadros in this forum there's stacks of info....Basically a 540 and a 6600 run the same hardware (nv43) although the quadro has one pixel unit disabled.

i just bought MSI NX6600GT(new computer) at last month, so far no problem for me, i like it! i have use Lightwave8.2, Modo1.02, combustion3...etc all are running smooth. i dont know Maya can get a same result or not? and my mainboard is MSI 915P Neo2, CPU is P4 3.4, 1G ram and 120G SATA hard disk. All spend around US$1,000(without monitor). hope can be your reference.
