IMO, no more than Cinemas and in many ways far more capable. People will often mistake flexibility for difficulty and Maya's admittedly bad rendering past haunts it still. When it comes down to it, there's about 5 important things to know about the renderer and then all is well.

Perhaps that might have been part of the initial reason for opening up a dialog if Mental Images years ago. Closer to the truth is that Hollywood does not live by one renderer alone any more than it lives by one 3D package alone. Having render options beyond Rman and the native one is a good broadening decision, regardless of their renderer's capabilities, and that's enough reason to do it.

Melon is definitely right.
Mayas renderer is definitely not the fastest, nor the easiest, but it's very flexible and powerfull. Once you learn to work with it, it's very powerfull.
I've not gotten to work with Mental Ray yet, but from what I can tell, it seems to bring radiosity rendering to Maya.
I'm sure the render has gotten much better since I last used it in 2.5. I haven't really been rendering in the past few years, I work in games so my work is all for realtime.
