i think the minimum is around 3500 px x 4500 px portrait,4500 px x 3500px landscape, but allota people do go allot higher depending on what its for.

nothing wrong with painting really big, as you can alsways downgrade.. whats your pc specs? thats usually the main factor, some apps will hang in mid-painting if its running low on ram

so, if you have xp and 256 ram, i wouldnt recommend anything much bigger than your screen resolution

for sketches, id say any size (though not stupidly small), sketches can be upsized as a discardable layer for line-art... for DPI, pending the specs of your pc.. 300 seems to give enough detail

yeah of course you can start with a 1200 maxi resolution and get some good details but then if you work in the industry and have to make commercial posters or work for cinema then yes you need extra resolution like NOOB! noticed.

i have approximately the same config than you and it begins to be really slow at 2500 pix...

Can another newbie join in? I did get a new computer because the laptop I used with painter kept crashing. Line drawings would crash it. It has 512 of ram and a 40gb drive but it shares memory with the video card. I even did an upgrade but it still frustrated me.:scream:

And then it happened....I became a tempory geek.:banghead:

I got lucky though. We got a tax refund this year and I've put it to use. Now I can sit down and be creative and learn how to use a computer, tablet and painter all at the same time.

We can help and learn from each other....and have a good time while we're at it.:wise:

Is there a thread for newcomers and beginners? There's a lot I need to learn. And something I just thought of, this is not the first time I've been a beginner nor is it the last.

That makes at least two of us man, check the Painter forum here, it has loads of useful info / tips and tricks, also check the stickies at the top of this forum and the Painter board over at conceptart.org, should help a bit.
