This is a rendering of Gene Starwind's "Caster," a single shot breech-loading pistol that fires magic shells.

Rendered in 3dsmax4.2 w/ Finalrender illustrator. 49mins @ 1024x 768 (12mins if no reflections)

Does anyone else like Outlaw Star? If so, hope you like this. Big fan of the show myself. Commentary is welcome as always.

How long time you took to finish it? Any plug-in you used, like efx? I love to made some non-photorealistic stuff, and I like to make traditional Chinese painting style with Maya recently, here is my post, Give me your comments in this post, thank you.:)

thank you all, glad you like it-

nObedienz - A fairly straightforward process (two rather): The main diffuse is a falloff map with three levels. Second, the toon lines from finalrender are modified to suit the object, thin parts like wires getting thin lines, and larger bulk objects getting thicker outlines.

LorenzOO - yes fr Illustrator works fine so long as the objects are not too small. The reflections took forever. If it was simple fall off maps with none of the reflections, it would take half as long to setup and render.

facial - took about 4 days of off and on work during free time. Most of it was spent on the gun itself; the rest in about 3 hours. Oh and I like your chinese painting style; an original concept indeed.

.:Jupiter_Jazz - That would be the two infamous #4 shells given to Gene by the naked wizard chick on tourist planet tenrei, the episode banned in the US for containing mild nudity. Too bad, that episode was the best.

hey great work

it remind me the render style of ap2000 (a short movie winning some prize on the Annecy Festival)

I really like the blend of 3d and cell edges.

hi here is a wireframe if one is interested. As one can see, it is not a terribly complex scene to set up - the majority of the modelling was invested in the gun. Total combined scene is about 125,000 faces.

Also, here is a picture of the set up for the main metal. The reflection strength settings ranged from 11% on gun barrel, to 25 on tabletop, and 33 on metal case.

That is really awesome. Gene does have the coolest gun. Those mini black holes he fires are the best. Great work!
