"An environment machinery maker has developed a robot that can be ridden and maneuvered like one in the animation series "Mobile Suit Gundam."

The single-seat Land Walker robot, standing 3.4 meters high and weighing 1 ton, can walk forward, backward or sideways at 1.5 kph by operating four pedals, and shoots sponge bullets from two air guns installed beside the cockpit, according to Masaaki Nagumo of Sakakibara Kikai Co., based in Shinto, Gunma Prefecture."

Hehe. Slashdot linked to this a while back. There was a video floating around of it walking around. Ever see one of those wind-up toys that sort of 'shuffle' to move forward? That's how this thing walks.

It's cool, but it's not "like Gundam'.

Im sure they are not far from making a robot that combines several smaller robots into a bigger one after the pilots dressed in red, green, yellow, blue or pink,
perform some stupid dancing an shout a battle cry.

Anyway I wouldnt care arriving to the office in one of those.

Like anything else, it's just first generation; more of a proof of concept, that's how I see it any-way. I can actually see nasa being intersted in seeing this technonlogy mature and improve, it would be really good at exploring/developing resources, and of course the military, though I don't believe they would invest in this. I say good for Masaaki Nagumo, I'll be interested t see how this develops.

Hasn't this been featured before? (i'm a little to lazy/busy to search for it)

There was a little movie abailable on the site.
The thing skates rather than walk. Which doesn't make it qualify as a "walker" by my book.

Edit: Like NanoGator said :)

Oh... you'll understand!
My plan for world domination starts with an army of those robots.
My enemies will be smoten!

maybe if it wasnt affiliated, associated to, referenced as being similar to, or mistaken for a gundam in any remotely distance way/shape or form, i might remotely think about being in one for nothing.

if anything worth 36million yen slaps 'gundam' in its description, it loses any credibility, in my books =]
must admit im a fan of the sponge bullets, but only if the guns make incredible noises.

Whats the purpose of having 6 identical photos for a marketing image?

There is no doubt that "mobile suits" will become reality. They would be very useful is the construction business. As for the military, I don't see how it would be useful at all until it becomes highly mobile, which would be far in the future. But basicly exoskeletons are serious development (and this thing is sort of linked to that technology).

...that was actually just Hazdaz posting the same image 6 times to help you visualize this robot army he was talking about.:surprised

who u gona take out with those sponge bulets??
I'm pretty sure that anyone who could afford to spend millions of yen on something as pointless (although extremely awesome) as this could also afford to have someone attach a gatling gun for them.

When you have money like Bill Gates or something you buy things just to spend money.

It could work really. In WW2 Helicopters were still only experimental devices and were not really considered combat vehicles but their maneuverability and use was there. Flash forward to Korea and Vietnam where the Helicopters VTOL capability was invalueble in built up areas Huge engineering efforts were made at that time to get Helicopters up to combat ready status. If a proven concept and actually combat useable and the militaries see a good use for them there could be huge developments for walking land tanks.

However I see the Power armor like from Warhammer 40k coming into use before Mecha Does.
