I'm fairly new to the CG world, and yes, I'm a 3D Max head. I'm looking forward to talking shop with my peers and learning from all of you as well as helping with anything my experience allows at the moment.

I'm looking to work my way into the game industry as a Modeler/Animator/Landscape Artist. I've increased my skill with Max to the point where I'm creating low-poly models. I'm focusing on increasing my modeling skills to a professional standard so I can move on to texturing.

I'm hoping CG Talk will welcome me with open arms. I don't have any fellow CG heads where I live...so you guys are my only hope at being amongst my own. If all works as expected, we should have a good time advancing in our professions while experiencing some turning points in our curriculum together.

I also understand that CG Talk is known for having competitions regularly. If so, can anyone provide me with some info as to How/What/When/Where?....we all know why...lol.

Right now my questions will be based on modeling, so, I'm getting ready to get back on Max....talk to you shortly...

Thanks for the link....

I didn't check your profile (if we can even do that on this forum) but are you from NY? If so, where?

Hey, Bandit. I'm a fellow Brooklynite (actually former, I've been livin' in Jersey for a while). I've been using max for about a year and a half now. You've come to the right place to learn. How long have you been using max? My advice would be to not just rely on this forum (although it's a great resource), but get some books or better yet, formal training. Although it's not neccessary, you'll make better progress in the company of fellow aspiring artists. Being in school is a great way to keep yourself motivated. As for the competitions, there should be a website up soon, at least that's what they've been saying. Welcome to the forum.

edit: Thanx for the link lowdown.

I've been using Max for about 3 months now. Don't be misled; I've learned a great deal. Also, I'm not new to the world of Art. I excel with a pencil and paper formidably. I'm just looking to get Max and Photoshop under my belt so I can begin putting my portfolio together. I'm working with my partner on a game title...it's going to be the real deal! We have plans of getting all the required material to present publishers with. First, need to become proficient with the tools.

I welcome any attempts to make CG friends within my home area. I believe we can learn faster that way.

I checked out your site...smooth. My site is actually finished; it just needs my personal work on it. I was holding off so I can make some high detailed models and scenes before I start directing traffic there.

Books....

Right now I'm using these titles...

3ds Max 4 Bible by Kelly L. Murdock

Modeling a Character in 3DS Max by Paul Steed

Any other suggestions?

Books:

The inside max series from New Riders is always a good reference.

3Dmax Magic (also by New Riders)

Inspired Series (Premier Press)...although not max specific, a terrific learning experience for any 3D artist.

If you're getting into game art, check out the game art forum on cgtalk, it's a great reference as well.

Here's a link to a thread I started for 3D game art tutorials, if you know of any online game-related 3D tuts, please feel free to add the links here:
