13 is an unlucky number in many cultures around the world. In Roberto's world, however, 349 is far, far worse. Don't even ask.

Mybutterflyiris: Funny!! Did you use ref for this one?

Stepington: Great seeing GIFs in the DSG. If I may crit a tiny bit, I think he puts his foot down a little too heavily, maybe ease off on the ease out. Also, I think he lifts his feet up too high, when people walk, their feet normally just lift an inch or so off the ground...hope you don't mind me critting!

stepington

hope you don't mind me critting! - paperclip

not at all! he's supposed to be kind of sloshing/stomping through the rain - i'm putting in splashies as we speak - but I probably ought to have done some reference video of myself. I have this really embarrassing tape of myself doing the dumbest things (for animation of course  - note the blush as several friends refuse to believe given reasons) there ought to be a gallery somewhere of animators' humbling video refs.

I'm pretty done with walker for the day though. After ripples and monster foot he'll probably get put on the shelf of "Things To Tweek One Day".
Crit away because my cat refuses to point anything out to me - she's so selfish:wip:

EDIT
May I ask whether you're a trad or comp animator? - paperclip
To answer your question - I'm an animation bi. not much squash and stretch on this sketch though -

I agree with your comments - but his sticky strides will have to remain as is for now:D.

paperclip
05-21-2005, 07:10 AM
Sure, but right now it sort of looks as if he's wading through water up to his shins. If I was walking along the street, splashing, I would slide my foot along the ground and kick up the water. Or maybe take lots of tiny little splashy steps. Or if you want to make him look as if he's trying to avoid splashing, you could make him look more cautious by giving him slightly 'sneaky' movements and only stepping on the ball of the foot. May I ask whether you're a trad or comp animator?

P.S- look in the general discussion forum, I've just opened a thread for 'humilating animating ref'. Post something there!!

Hi Stepington! Really nice animatione here! A friend and I are doing a flash animation and I was thinking that it could be useful if you could briefly explain the process you took to produce this cool piece.

Just a question: are not the arms supposed to move the opposite way ?

ps.: I'm doing the backgrounds for the animation, you guys can see some early work clicking here (http://img275.echo.cx/my.php?image=scena131uw.swf), I'd love to hear some comments...feel free to leave a p.m.!

Stepington, is that Flash? You only used GIF? How you go 'bout doing that?

paperclip
05-21-2005, 09:14 AM
Imageready is a sister program that ships with Photoshop. You can put all the different frames into different layers and then when you go into Imageready, you put as many different frames as you need into the animation panel. You then switch on/off the layers of the different frames to produce the animation.

Hope this helps! Maybe we should have a GIF topic in the DSG? They are great fun to do.

Stepingt: Great update, you can tell much more clearly what is happening. I particularly like the follow through on the red rope- what is it though? Keep up the good work!

All that it takes is dedication, and practice, and some good direction. You should ask for more constuctive criticism. You can get a boat load of good direction from the many talented artists on this forum. Before you know it, you'll amaze yourself.

Ok here's my $00.02. When you're drawing faces, at least for the first 100 something drawings, look at a reference. You can get proportions better and solidify in your mind what the structure of the face is/looks like. Also look online or get a book of the basic shapes of the face/head. Try to use more line variation. Make the lines thicker in spots that seem to carry weight or draw attention.

Better yet, as a good exercise, DON'T use any line in a drawing. Concentrate on the shapes of shade/color to form your composition. Composition,,, well, that's a different class........ ;)

Good job

Photoshop, almost 2.5 hours. Finally got off my ass and painted something. About an hour into it I basically scrapped it and started over as I wasn't getting the composition/pose I wanted. Still didn't come out exactly as I had hoped, but I think it's time to move on. As always, crit please. =)

Carter- Nice stuff! I think more color shifting in the highlights would help the image have much more depth. By this I mean use less "straight out 'o the bottle" white for highlights. A simple color balance/curves adjustment in photoshop can be an easy fix. Maybe a little tag on the collar? Funny stuff though, good work.

Matthew S- Lovely feeling of light and movement! Very aggressive. I like it.

KDW- Great pose and background color/texture!

Stepington- Very cool! Perhaps you should make one step for the monster for every 1.5 cycles of the man. This would help add to the illusion of this huge creature following him.

Mybutterflyiris - cool man - yes..scary

Stepington - thats wicked - freakin amazing to be able to build up a piece like that -
really inspires me to try some 2d

thanks all -

Moonlit Matt - yeah i was wondering if even one per two -as is it's a 12 frame cycle. - Ill see how size is @24 frames. Was also wondering if I ought to animate two monster feet ((instead of cheating with one)) - and really play with the perspectives. ( love your artistic style - your peices really feel as though they're on paper- way to over come the digital trapings!)

Thanks thesightsmith! The whole reason I do the DSG is for constructive criticism. I've been a game modeller for the last 5 years, and really felt my 2d skills were lacking. I've got a daily sketchbook (pencil) that is shaping up nicely (I sketch people on the tram to work every day), and I've been following Loomis (the god of drawing). The 3 colourful drawings I did were aimed at being cartoonish, so the lines were meant to be there, but I see what you mean about heaviness of line. I try to avoid sketch lines in most of my DSG work! Glad to see my thoroughness hasn't gone unnoticed!:D

Art2 and paperclip Thank you very much. Your kind words are very much appreciated, and motivating.
paperclip -
1. I kind of worked on it in between other things. I think if I put it all together, I'd guess it took about 1hour 15 minutes, or so?
2. If I'm improving, I have to chalk it up to 2 things. First, Drawing everyday has made a huge difference. It's been about 6 months now since I started posting to the Daily Sketch Forum. And second, I've been making an effort to see and study as much art as I can. Both classical artists and all the incredibly talented artists here at cgtalk.com and at conceptart.org.
3. As for Loomis, I've spent some time lately looking at his books, but haven't had much of a chance yet to really dive in and study them. But maybe if I'm lucky, some of it is rubbing off. I do plan on really going through them and studying them when I can find the time.
