View Full Version : afterFX dualCPU support
mirkoj 05-19-2005, 11:36 PM Hi,
Just wondering why afterFX doesn't use 2 CPUs :) Any ideas?
I would like to boost afterFX rendering time and only option now i to render useing few computers, but time needed to setup that rendering isn't worth. So, how else to speed up afterFX? I have dual opteron 250, 1GB ram. I know that it is memory hungry so how much would I benefit from more memory in final rendering time, and could faster hdd help? I;m working with 2 SATA hdds in strip raid. How much would SCSI RAID help? Is it worth when looking price-speed gain?
Thank you!
P.S.
Is there shortcut to resize layer to the whole duration of composition?
For examples composition and layer are 10sec duration, then I resize composition size, and layer duration stays at 10sec lenght. Is there shortcut to resize it to the new duration?

Unlike with mac I have not succseeded with installing an extra render engine on pc.
However at work we just bought gridironxfactor and that gave the option to use the second proc. for rendering.
If you have some spare pc´s for rendering invest in the 6 node version.
Unlike Afx own network render function you don´t have to collect the project to render it on multiple pc´s. On top of that you have the option to use the extra procs. for previewing while you still continue working. You can even use it in a mixed envoirement of mac and pc.
They have a basic version for free to try that only supports previewing with max 2cpu´s.

AE is not multi-threaded per se. Many functions ever only use one processor, some others will use all resources (several blur filters for instance). Developers have to take care to make there plugins use all CPU's, AE doesn't do this automatically. As for the rest - well, fast discs certainly improve I/O speed which often is the real bottleneck when using multiple footage sources. More RAM is also always welcome even though it will only be noticeable on heavy compositions with lot's of effects or if you use the paint functionalities.

Look in the manual how to trim your in- and out-points or to set your composition durations. If your layer is a still or solid, you need to re-import it in your comp to extend it. For some strange reason AE will maintain the length of the original comp on such files. Animated sequences can be extended using time stretch.
