Newby question

I have two layers. First runs for full 10 mins. second for 2 mins (during the 6th min) I want the fisrt layer to be hidden for the two mins. that the second one is running for.

How is this accomplished.

Thanks for any help.

Duplicate the first layer
Set the original's Out Point to end right before the second layer begins.
Set the Duplicated Layer's In Point to start when the second layer ends.

Think of it like clips in a Non-Linear Editing Systems.

Or... actually put the second layer on top of the first is easiest right? Like Photoshop right?

Thanks for the reply. I'm already up to 50 layers and am trying to reduce file size. Thanks for the technique, thats what I'll probably do, but just wondering of there are some sort of hold or hide option in AE.

(the second layer doesnt fill screeen so If I put the layer above the first, the first one bleeds
out on the edges)

Thanks again

Well a 100% opacity keyframe the frame before the 2min clip starts, and a 0% opacity the next frame. And reverse in the end, should do the trick without adding any new layers.

If the 10 minute clip consists of a lot of layers and the 2 min clip is one layer or a bunch of layers you should think about nesting your comps so you don't have 50 layers to deal with. One quick and easy way is to use pre comp. Just select the layers that compse the 10 minute clip and go to Layer>Pre Compose this will move all of the selected layers into their own comp and place that comp on the timelinr. Then you can just go to your 6 minute mark and hit alt + ] which will snap the layers out point to your playhead position then you can snap your 2 minute clip or comp to that spot by selecting it and hitting the [ key which will move the whole layer to that spot or you can shift+drag it to snap. Then just duplicate your pre compose layer and drag the out point to the end of your 10 minute comp, move your playhead to the 8 minute mark and use the alt+[ to snap the in point to you 8 minute mark.

If you don't already know in the upper left of your timeline window where the timecode is loacted you can click on that and type in an exact time (i.e. typing in 8.0.0 would jump your playhead to 8 minutes)

Here are other helpful techniques. I'm gonna get back to basics, so sorry if you already know.

Down my your layers, next to the mode and track matte options, there is of course the eyeball, audio, and lock controls. The eyeball turns off/on the layer, the audio turns off/on the sound and the lock.. wells locks and unlocks the layer.

The icon in-between the audio and lock icon is the solo icon. Click this and all of the other layers will be hidden. It the same as turning the eyeball off on all the other layers, but faster. You could also show more then one solo layer.

There is another area next to the layer name, down by your com with icons like M, a cube, a jagged diagonal line and so forth. If you can't see it, press F4. The first icon is the shy icon, for turning your layer into a shy layer. This will hide the entire layer from the comping area, but still visible in your composition. After you turn on the shy icon for that layer, press the master shy icon (a big face and nose, next to the master blur icon) to hide those layers. This will make it easier to work with your comp of 50 layers without precomping.

Also to move in time, you could press Command-G or Control-G for a pop-up jump to time window.
