View Full Version : Movie Test Render: Grain and Popping

I rendered a test yesterday and render is very grainy and the antialiasing is almost non existant. The only way to get this cleaner is either crank up the various quality settings to maximum and/or enable the distance blur mentioned in the manual. Both of which come at an expense of much longer renders. It's clear theres going to be allot of tweaking and tests to get optimal results.
There is also a problem with trees "popping" in the a camera pan

I think that you are using to low parameter in antialiasing settings. I am now rendering a video in LW using HD Instance to create trees, and rendering in enhanced extreme with 33 passes flickering is there ... with more than two hour/frame of rendering time !!!
Rendering hi detailed geometry, like trees into vue or any other program needs a hi AA settings ... i think that about 64 samples min. to get acceptable fliker-free animations. I love how C4D make his first pass with 256 samples by default !!!, but C4D has not a valid volumetric or instance rendering solution now, so for this kind of projects it is not valid.
Only solution is huge render times and huge render farms ... with a lot of work in settings to get the best relation between quality and speed ...

I've made some headway with the grain problem. I've increased the Distance Blur and Influence in the scene. Unfortunately the effect kills much of the detailed appearance seen in still images and adds to the render time. It turns out the grain is not the result of GI, special lighting or the number of rays used. It's inherent with View renders and becomes prominent in animations. For animation the manual suggests Distance Blur as one solution for this reason.

There is still a problem with Object AA on the tower details. even at 95% AA and increased sampling, the towers mast details still shimmer. As suggested on another forum I am currently running another test at 640x480 to see if it's a Vue resolution limitation.
