Title: Grandmother`s House
Name: Mikk
Country: Estonia
Software: 3ds max

I made this kitchen based on my grandmothers kitchen although it is not a copy. Just tried to create a nice warm atmosphere with soft lighting. Feedback welcomed.

- You've done a good job creating a nice warm atmosphere with soft lighting.
- I think the shelves in the back could use a little more work though.
- The wine glasses look like they are floating.
- I really like the floor and the table cloth!

Awesome Job. I agree with Ed Harris with the wine vases and the shelves though

Nice work. It's great to see someone try an architectural piece with a different mood than the rest.

It feels very new... I'm dying to see evidence that the house has been lived in for many decades. Paint cracks on the walls would be nice. Scuffs on the hardwood floor, like the chairs have been moved across it thousands of times would be cool. I'd like to see the door have scratches, like a dog wanting outside kinda-thing.
It looks like your grandmother just had an Ikea spending spree a couple days ago. How about an old rug, or some evidence of knitting...maybe bad knitting.
To me it doesn't feel warm...it doesn't look like Grandma cooks very often...try adding many more spice jars to the rack. Crank up the homelyness! You're almost there.

Love the old house-feeling I get from your image. To me it's very summery. But what I would like to see, is a little bit more wear and tear, some paint peeling off in places, the tiles not looking quite so reflective, more matt. The windows look brand new, maybe some darker colours in places from usage. Love the curtains and the way it moves in the wind. Excellent job!

Great atmosphere. I think the shelves look good, and personally i like the design (that design is getting more and more common over here). What I react to somewhat is the window frames (i believe I'm not used to that they're not painted), and especially the right one, top right corner, looks a bit unrealistic to me. I also think that what is outside the window looks strange (colours a bit off, an flat looking; if I cover it with my hand the image as a whole looks more realistic). Minor things though, really great work! I especially like the blanket on the green chair, and the table top blanket and curtains.

Looks very nice, has a scandinavian light to it. I see you are from Estonia so that explains it.
Good work

Looks great! Is this rendered with Maxwell? If not, I would love to see your lighting setup. The specular highlight on the floor is a nice touch too. Keep up the good work!

I'll keep you in mind for interior work.

Excellent work, your lighting is outstanding. You used what would otherwise be simple elements in such a way that it just "looks right". Good colours, lighting, composition - all in all, an elegant work.

I couldn't have made this image - but then again, your grandmother clearly has better colour sense than mine did (what, no orange, knitted blankets over a blue chair?). ;)

You`re right it is maxwell. And the curtains are made with a high resolution clipmap.
Here is a small update I tweaked it in photoshop, the colours are a bit warmer and the outside is a bit destratuated.

Very nice. I don't agree with other comments that the kitchen isn't worn enough or dirty enough. My mother's kitchen is every bit as clean and orderly as this one. She has more stuff hanging on the walls, but it doesn't look wrong at all. The only gripe I would have is the lack of a screen on the windows. More of a older house design issue though and not really anything bad with your image. Great work!

(Hehe! I had a similar idea a couple of months ago. I've been having trouble remembering details about my grandmother's kitchen, though.)

The athmophere is perfect - it does look like the home of a grandmother.
The light is great but I too think everything looks too new. I'm not saying it should be all dirty, cracked and chipped but it at least show some discreet signs of wear.

nice images and nice modelling and lighting
i have to agree that not every kitchen is worn and dirty with paint peeling away with cracks etc, but some skuff marks from the chairs on the floor would be natural. i think every one wants the "dirty it up, its too clean and perfect" look to cg images cause it would make it look more realistic but to be honest people do repair cracked and peeling paint all the time esp in a kitchen( alittle bit of the worn look is good).
bottom line i love the image and like the materials for the curtains. nice render m8

Very nice image, I like it very much.

I think the curtains look a little bit stiff. That's a difficult thing to do. But top notch scene. The lighting is very nice.

The rendertime was nearly 24 hours for 800x600 resolution on my AMD athlon ~2,1GHz, 512mb RAM. I still made some noise reduction after that, i think that the program NeatImage is the best for getting rid of unwanted noise. Maxwell is pretty slow but gives really good results that are worth waiting.

The thing that pops out the most is the Reflected blue light under the table.
I am guessing it is some kind of reflection from the sky through the window. It looks wierd cause it doesn't look posible. It would be occluded by the table and chairs and never reach the Eye. If you are raytracing then it is just one of those ocasions where reality looks strange, try another pespective or just avoid it with some other means. If you are faking it then fix it. Remove it or add the table and chair and make them occlude the relfection

cheers

The blue light is raytraced reflcetion from the sky. The sky very bright compared to the rest of the scene. It actually looks like this when i am in the place this image was inspired by.
