View Full Version : Need help with character setup
Frinsklen 10-11-2002, 04:43 PM Hi,
I've been animating with character studio for a while, and I want to learn how to build and setup a good skeleton with the new IK and bones stuff in max5.
I've tried downloading pepeland's IKJoe, but I'd like to find a tutorial that shows how to do the whole thing from the beginning.
I want to forget about character studio, and be able to animate characters without it.
Thanks in advance.

I will soon finish the arm party, and then do the rest.
Hope it will help

Also look in the Help -> Tutorial part of the program. Exellent character-rigging tut right there, indepth and everything. It's pretty much the most obvious place we should all look for help on the program, but I'll be damned if I didn't only notice it a short while ago :)

Sergio: when on earth are you gonna get that site back in order!?? We need that shit!!! Nice rigs, by the way.
Frinsklen: I feel your pain. I'm trying to learn some nice riggging and skinning techniques too (mostly out of neccessity). I studied the IK Joe model and I have to say that setting it up (the spline IK version) is alot more complex than it seems. That little hip controller is all scripted. The good news is that there is a tutorial in the max5 help files that goes through setp-by-step of how to righ IK Joe (scripts and all). Now to find the time to actually DO that tutorial is another issue.

Thanks a lot, guys.
I've noticed that IKJoe's setup is similar to character setup in Maya, I mean, it's a more real rigging. Character studio is an excellent software but obviously, it doesnt teach you how to do the right character setup.
Animating the IKJoe way, makes the switch between maya and max much easier from the animation point of view.

Sorry, it's not IK Joe (I was hallucinating), but it is a great reference, and they do explain the scripting proccess that's used on IK Joe (using another model by Daniel Martinez Lara). Although the script that they have you write is used to allow for a spinal twist. You could easily adopt it and then use the script from IK Joe with some adjustment. Sorry for the misinformation.
