I looked under my bed and I found my old school quick sketches. I took one into the computer today and I colored it. This is the result. Your opinions?

Did you create the double image on purpose? If so, it was a bad idea. Also, the underdetailed ear bothers me. And the colouring looks smudgy.

For a quick sketch, the drawing seems OK, though.

Remember, it is the very quick sketch according to a living man, who was my model during a few minutes. Details are not so important here. There is a very big difference between a drawing according to a photograph or drawing a fantasy and a drawing according to the real man, who does not sit as a sculpture and he is still stirring. My goal was not to make a "photorealistic" study :)

Colouring is OK to me, because it is not a rule to use only some "pink" and clear colors or so. Feelings go first.
Smudgy and dirty colors in a comprehensive view = something or somebody is old, sad, pessimistic, in bad health ... but it is not a dramatic study, so there is not a big expression.

Thanks for comment anyway.

I always thought a study was meant to be clear - the overuse of the color overwelms the good foundation, if it had been applied to enhance the form it would have worked. If you'd been going for a *feeling* he looks quite vibrant, far from bad health, so the smudgeing is confusing.

As said the foundation looks good,

Maybe if I will have a tablet, the look of the colouring will be different, but I just work with my PC mouse :)

When I draw by hand and colour also by hand with some color pencils, I never use the smudging technique. But how can I create the clear pencil look in a computer? I do not know, maybe a photoshop filter but this is no good way in my opinion.

Heh. Filters are no use, that much is certain. For a pencil look, use Painter instead of Photoshop.

I have not Painter, but I would like to know more about it. Where is the difference between Photoshop and Painter? I have not any experience.

Here is an another try of the sketch. I added some quickly colour gestures in photoshop with my mouse. Maybe it is better.

Nice one :)

Painter is not extremely different from Photoshop. Just that the brushes are more set for painting (everything feels a lot more natural when painting with Painter). It feels less "technical". Photoshop is better for coloradjusting and retouching and stuff.
