View Full Version : PA Challenge - character - timothyD
eirenicon 02-16-2002, 02:14 AM I entered the challenge previously, with a vehicle, but it just got too boring, and I hate working on boring models. So I've scrapped that one and decided to do a character. My first character, in fact!
She's a sniper mercenary, but that doesn't mean she'll sell out to the highest bidder. Often as not, simply killing him will net you more cash (:D). She carries a scoped plasma rifle and knows how to use it.
I'm modelling her wearing a jumpsuit, and she'll also have boots of some sort, so I'm not worrying too much about the feet. I've only blocked out the hands, and haven't started on the head yet. Her proportions aren't meant to be exactly realistic, as I'm modelling with comic references.
Here's the first wip image:

And two more renders for my adoring audience before I collapse from exhaustion:

And here's another update.
The helmet is hinged at one side, allowing it to be swung open, letting the wearer use her weapons and other equipment. Oh, and I realize it bears resemblance to Boba Fett - that's entirely accidental. The final character won't be much like him, though.

Hey,
I'm diggin on the kind of sculptural clunky feel you got going on. I mean that in the good way. It has alot of potential. I look forward to seeing more.

Wow, a reply! Hey KOryH, thanks for the input! I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "sculptural clunky feel", care to elaborate? :)
And here's an update, with wireframe included:

I plan on adding various bits of armor, as well as modelling seams into her leather outfit. Also going to add tubes and such to the helmet, going down to an air filter unit on her belt. She'll need a strap to hold her gun on, too, and I think a belt of ammo would look right.

Yes,
Let me explain... I certainly did not mean that in any sort of derogitory way. I just think that your model has a very hand crafted feel. The thicknes and simplicity of the helmet makes it seem made by hand, rather than my a machine. I personaly like that look a lot. I don't know if that was an intentional descision or not, but it is certianly worth analyzing. I may enhance your work, which ever direction you may wish to take it.
Keep up the good work

I love the hemet.
How about some wires or breathing apparatus, hoses etc...

KOryH - Ah, I see. It's meant to have something of a hand-crafted, 'organic' look to it, and I guess I succeeded. Thanks for the comments :)
smallone3d - thanks! I'm adding breathing apparatus right now, as you can see from this latest pic. The hose is meant to be rubber, flexible and easy to repair.

Just screwing around in PS with an earlier render... think I'll take the texturing in this direction if I ever get around to it. (Although it _is_ rather Fett.)

A big update! I've done some work on the body, adding seams and such. Also added the belt with knife. Still working on various straps for her gun and other equipment, as well as gloves and boots.

Damn this is fun :D
looks pretty good! I like the contrast between the tight modern clothes and the clunky helmet. Good perportions. It could use some muscle detailing but you proubably already know this.
