Goro, steppington, zeoyn and loulu79 - excellent work!

I was going to go with the Native American storyteller also, but I
just HAD to watch The Bachelor to see if he picked the cute one from McKinney, Texas - and he did! Both ladies were super sweet, but being a Texan, I had to root for Sara B. Its a big embarrasment and I hang my head in shame to admit that I got totally hooked on that stupid show!

When I used to sit cross legged in the dirt and listen to scary stories as a child, my mind would eventually drift away from the tale being told to me and I would become my own storyteller. I would slide into my own storied dreamland where I often became the same creature lurking in the woods that I was meant to be afraid of.

Photoshop, between 1 and 2 hours (kept having to answer my phone, damn outside world!)

Goro! No story-bot? I'm a bit dissapointed, but amazing work nonetheless.

Hey Herod,

How did you get that half-tone, grayscale effect?

Her0d
05-17-2005, 04:22 PM
Hey Herod,

How did you get that half-tone, grayscale effect?
Ive got some halftone Photoshop patterns ive found on net some time ago, so I just filled the 'multiplied' layer above the sketch with it, masked it all, and erased the mask with the brush tool in places where I wanted the halftone pattern to show up. Then I smoothed (blur/levels) the layer's mask. Then - another layer, and the same process (about 4 tone layers here).

madame medusa - What am I doing wrong

well, i'm not sure what you mean by "wrong" - it's got a consistent style to it - the expressions are great - i would maybe push the dark around the edges to exagerate their fear of the unknown a tad? -
all in all it has a nice feel to it - their faces have a great heart to them. I love the smallest boy.

That's a really good one Lady Medusa!!! :D

I think that you could use a softshadowing because it seems like they're flatter than they should be because their bodyparts aren't casting shadows/occluding ambient light. It's a gradual transition towards the more covered parts like armpits. Don't forget to source the liight ;)

Very nice Splinepusher... Nice style.
Just can't help thinking though, the perspective on the book makes it look a bit too flat and it almost looks like the Dad has got half a childs head in a box... See what I mean? Unless of course it actually IS half a childs head in a box and the Dad is telling us the story of how he got it... In which case, nicely done...!

darylart
05-19-2005, 05:51 PM
loulu79: a few tips on the road - right now its hard to know where the lighting comes from. there is no defined light source. if you imagine the light from a certain direction, and paint light to dark on for example, the tree, it will have more of a depth feel to it. and this applies to everything in the picture. show us where the light hits the pants of the boy, and where the shadows are etc. this also forces you to use more colors and making it look less flat. another thing could be to remove the outlines from the initial sketch. hope it helps some. /D

Oh btw: Robert, is it okay to redo the finished piece for the sake of improving?

Edit: Waitaminute: Somebody already asked that question...
