View Full Version : vadim: mafia man
agasco 05-16-2005, 04:44 AM hello everyone!
Here i send a character i started two weeks ago in the vancouver film school. His name is vadim, the head of a mafia gang in some city in a close future. I still have a lot of work to do with the modeling, and coments and critics are welcome.
I hope you guys like it!

what are you going to do with the cloth when you animate? the draping is so realistic in your model, do you plan to have it move realistically?
Greedo
05-16-2005, 04:53 AM
great modelling especially the cloth... i think he needs a cigar though!!
agasco
05-16-2005, 05:16 AM
thanx for the replies! that was fast,
Well, by now i'm not planning to animate him, is going to be more a modeling, texturing and lighting work, but maybe i do some motion capture (not sure yet) and then i'll think about the cltoh...
Greco, hehe, yeah i was thinking about the cigar too,.. but he is gonna have some fat rings and a big gun.
http://student.vfs.com/~3d53alvaro/mafia/gun.jpg
Realy like the silhoutte of you character, and the way the fat rolles over his collar.
The only thing I might suggest: I think there should be some tention in the cloth across the top of his shoulders, just to show some stretching.
Model is looking good, see ye later.

I like it, he's looking tough. He'd look cool with some big rings on his fingers.

very nice model, i like the style
maybe the hands are a bit too long, im not sure
Cinimod
05-16-2005, 11:57 AM
Lol, he looks a lot like Paul Martin! Its great :applause: Overall looking really good, loving the style and the wrinkles u make in the pants. Hmm, maybe there can be more wrinkles for the shirt around the belt area? It seems like more cloth/fat would hang over the belt.

Amazing work man, really cool. This is a really cool and very very well modelled character.
Do you have sketches/photo's of where it is based on?
agasco

i'm glad you guys like it so far! here i send my last update. I did this model from some sketches i did, and i'll send them later.

Model is looking fat my friend.. looking pretty cool too. Gun is looking very nice.. hopefully you'll have time to rig his arm to pull out the gun so you can show the whole thing when you do a model rotation. Looking forward to some fatty skin textures.

Looks like one mean mofo. I swear I saw this guy on Burrard yesterday. Ha ha. The gun looks cool and the bracelet is a nice touch. Only comment I have is that the tip of the tie could be more pointy. See you tomorrow.

This model is looking most sweet. The only crit that I have at all is that maybe his belt needs a few holes in it so that after he is done eating, he can loosen it up a bit.
I am interested in seeing what you are gonna do with the texturing. This guy looks like a totally fat slob so some grimy stains and sweaty rings around his collar would work . . . but this guy is also in a futuristic mob so maybe he would wear expensive clothing and jewelry and have a much more classy appearance . . . with some degree of grace (like brando in The Godfather.)
Sweet stuff man very very sweet
agasco
05-19-2005, 07:33 PM
thanks guys!
i found some stuff to fix, so its gonna take me some more time to finish the modeling. For the texturing i'm thinking like makining his face all sick, with white and blues, and the dress... well i'm looking to some movies to check mafia looking colors for the shirt and the pants.
but yeah, thanks again, and i'll send some more stuff when i get something done.
cheers

heck yea...this rules...man i wish i knew where to get started on modeling people. I'm bored with modeling rooms and buildings..bla!
Any tips on where to start ? I've got Zbrush so once I get a basic shape down I can take it in there and I sort of have an understanding of how it works...
agasco
05-20-2005, 07:03 AM
ggjason- thanks man, yeah i also started couple of years ago with architecture and interior design with 3d max, i still like it... this is my second character in xsi, and to start... well you know, doing proxy of the character, and modeling in different pieces and then merge what needs to be.I'm very interested in caricatures and stylized characters. zbrush, i haven't used yet but i'm looking foward to, i've seen amazing stuff with it, i may take this one's head and hands and do some zbrush on it.
cheers and good luck!

05-21-2005, 01:49 AM
Hey Mang, have you seen Estar Guars yet?
Any who, just lookin at your model, and theres a couple things not sitting quite right with me, his wrists seem a little high, so I guess that means his arms lookin a little short.
Also, his bracelet looks solid... if its metal thats all good, but if its leather or something I would think it would sag a bit.
agasco
05-23-2005, 06:02 AM
yeah domo, about the arms, i'm gonna fix it 'cause i think you are right, and the brazalet is metalic but i'm going to make it a little baggy, and i'm gonna fix some of the geometry on the face to make it older and with more personality, also the shirt.
oh!, i'm going tomorrow to estar guarz, lets see..........

05-25-2005, 03:01 AM
hey dude ,
hes lookin like one tough fat man, i love your character hes gonna look sweet all textured!

good job dude

thanx destroyfred! well, the school is very good, very intense, veeeeeeeeery intense, and tere is a lot of talented people that help and inspire you. Its a one year program and in the half of it, you can chose between modeling, animation and vfx.

DAmn AGASCO,
this is very cool stuff!!! nathaellion: thanx, i've also thought about that, yeah the concept is more sinister, and i'm doing some chages to the colour map to make him look a little more sick(not too much, because i don't want him to look like he is wearing make up).
ghost dog:thanx, i didn't use zbrush, its all hand painted (i was going to use zbrush, but i'm finding all the posibilities you have with a hand painted bump, its amazing!!)
taisir: Thank you man!! i apreciated your coments a lot! and i'm glad you like the nose stuff, i think its a little detail that make it look some futuristic or weird.... Thank you again. You got some really cool stuff in your web (congratulations for the animago award!!) Keep it on!!:bounce:

taisir
06-06-2005, 02:59 PM
i love it! great! :scream:
what material should the nose thing be off? metal or plastic? - in both cases i would suggest to make a cool texture for the close up - kind of used, scratched edges or sth. like that...
your hand painted bump is pretty cool, i also appreciate to paint in psp..
keep going!
ps: thx for the compliment about my STELLA :)

hello everyone, and thank you for the replies. i'm still texturing, and the head its almost done, have to fix some stuff...
Rumr: thnax, well, i think i've been a month now, may be some more, and i'm hoping finishing it in like 2 weeks.
The clyke: Yeah man, i' ve already started the background, i have the proxy of the city and now i'm making some props like street lights, traffic lights,.... I'll start with the texturing right when i finish this guy.
Glassefx: Well the nose stuff is some cyber implant, heheheh, yeah to give him some subtle futuristic looking.
Taisir: whats up man, right now i'm working on the bump map, i think is going to be metal, and the color....... i'm not sure if is gonna be grey or red........ i'll see. (yeah psp rules!)

Hei man,
that is a VERY NICE color map!
The model looks good, clean wire, textures look good too.
You will do really well man!
Keep up the good work!
For crits, if it were me, i think i would darken the eye area even more and i would give a bit more dirt on the nose, forehead, and a bit on the mouth surrounding too.
But then it is still your decision. It looks really good already.

Killer Update! I like it all, texture lighting, everything mad sick! All thats missing is a bit of oil on his skin or a drip of swet and hes rekin! 5 stars.

Man, I wish I could make textures that look half as good as that. The only crits I could come up with are, the wrinkles on the cloth seem to be a bit sharp, and the zipper area is bit short. you might lengthen it along the lines of the crotch.
Everything else looks amazing. More updates. ;)

i think the model and the actual maps are good, i assume the surfacing and lighting isnt done..
really good work man
but i feel that guy is poor one forecd to work with them - it will depend now on eyebrows to make him evil-
and didn't you notice his skull there's something like splotch on the right side of the head.
one more last thing
his legs are thin and his upper body is fat. i don't know maybe that's right but that what i feel
and the fingers are alittle bit thin.
that's all

Alvaro,
Quite pleasurablle model . I enjoy how you have been very methodical and concientious in maintaining a high standard of quality throughout the development of the mafia man.
The only critique that glares out at me is the implant as it seems totally without reference or reason and totally contrasting the overall theme of the image. It's as if you are confused as to just what you are attempting to create in this charactor, or are attempting, unsuccessfully, to put too many different themes togather. In my opinion your work would have much more validity and power if you left well enough alone and allowed him to be a mafia man not a mafia man cyborg as it doesn't make any justifiable sense.
Robert

Wow, that guy is looking completely mafioso. The clothes are looking good too, now I have no crits for this guy.
About the thin legs, and fat upper body, that's almost exactly the way my dad is built. He says he has a body like potato, with toothpicks for legs. :D
Your model looks very intimidating, like a mob 'leg-breaker'. Great work.

thank you all for the coments! i'm still changing the colors of the shirt, and fixing stuff, the lighting, textures.... I change the color fo the shirt to black with white collar....
Roberte: well , yeah there is people that like it a lot, people that hates it, all kind of coments, the android stuff is based in an Enki Bilal's character, a little tribute to such of amazing artist, also i'm making an enviroment, where the mafia man is in, some kind of futuristic industrial city, to give some context. Even tough i still don't know if i'm gonna use it (the implant). Thanks again for the complements and the coments.

I have read befor that nothing is sharp and hard edged in the real world. Id fix that gun if hes going to pull it out or hold it out. but then again you might not get a close up of it.

06-17-2005, 12:40 AM
Heh, I love the "Made in Czech Republic" on the barrel of the revolver.
WOW!
This is a fantastic piece of modelling and texturing. I just wouldn't know where to start on a piece with such detail. That said, would it be possible to see your face bump map or a sample of part of it? Using XSI are you able to paint directly on the model or is it all unwrapped and painted in Photoshop? I've just got no idea and would love to see what you painted in photoshop. The bump mapping is what gets me, the raised and sunken areas for the pores, this blows me away. If there is a tute out there for this kind of thing, could you or someone else please link me.
Also where did you get the texture for the leather holster and it's straps?
Keep the WIP's coming, I'm watching with such awe!

06-17-2005, 02:52 AM
Very awesome!, I think a man like thats hands would be very worn and damaged, just my opinion though, I'd give him a pinky finger that does'nt bend right, as if it were broke at one time and wasnt set, maybe some sweat stains too that would be gross
Locus

By the way, the real-world equivalent of that revolver is a design created by the Mateba company. Rather than operating on a manual cocking, or manual double-action trigger pull (which is generally heavier and slower) for each shot like standard revolvers, the Mateba Autorevolver (http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Mateba-Autorevolver) is a semi-automatic weapon, using the recoil to cock the hammer and spin the cylinder to the next round. The logic of mounting the barrel on the lower position is that it reduces the leverage of the kick, so that it's easier to control when firing.
I love the model so far, by the way. The face has a lot of character.

woow!, hey man, now i know more about guns :scream:, that some cool information, i thought it was totally imaginary, but it seems is not... thats a sweet looking revolver, and i think it matches perfectly with the character.

thanks guys!
destroyfred: i´m going to rig the character, maybe for next week, and i´m hoping to do some mocap (maybe) and some face shapes.
one question: how are the jobs in france?, is it really hard to find a 3d job? i´m from spain, and when i finish this course, i may go back to europe and look for a job there. This last few months i´ve seen some amazing shorts from france, AMAZING, a lot of talent, very original stuff and very cool stuff, looking foward for more...:bounce:
cheers!

Very cool model Alvaro. I think you need a bit of tweaking with the lighting, make it more dynamic.. looks a little flat. Give Vadim more contrast, like a brighter side with a darker shadow side. A rimlight would be nice too. Love his turkey face.
One of my favorite charecters. Ive been dig this guy.

Your model looks very intimidating, like a mob 'leg-breaker'.
This is a great model, it's amazing and I wish that I could model like this, but the quoted sentence reveals a problem with your model. He doesn't look like a mafia boss, he looks like the guy who does all the dirty work within the mafia, not the guy who sends someone else to do the work. He looks like a soldier. But the model itself is one of the best i've ever seen.

It's probably too late and you may have had this in mind, but the revolver is a little bit too Vash the Stampede/Mateba for my mental image of a mafia weapon. I picture more of a Taurus Raging Bull or perhaps Danny Vermin's (from Johnny Dangerously) ;) revolver for that character. Very nice otherwise though.

Great model and very good concept too. Do you use UV mapping?
Are you writing the story too?

hey man, i really like the texture on his face, the skin texture looks really good. Maybe his cloth can have some tweak on shader and model. maybe add more wrinkle and more texture details. because now the level of the cloth seems not matched with his head. good job!

thanks for the replies guys!
yourworstnightmare: yeah, may be he looks like a soldier, it doesn't really matter, he also could be a boss (big, fat, with that expresion in his eyes, with those rings....) hehehe, i wanted to give him some bad ass attitude.
magnumhb: heheh, thats some close detail, i chose the mateba 'cause it looks cool and fat, the other one you are telling me looks nice too, and it would fit perfect with the character, but i don't know too much about guns anyway, but thanks!
medunecer: yes i used uv mapping, about the story.... i have something, but i'm not gonna have time to make it, by now i'm making the set for it, and after that i'll start some other characters, thanks.
losttogether: thanks Ally, i agree that the textuers on the face have way more work than the cloth, i'm thinking tweaking it some more, make it look more like cloth, but is got to be very subtle because it suposed to be all clean and new (the cloth). By the way, you have a very nice reel, the set and the little girl look awesome!
cheers!

It doesn't really mater because that's one of the best models i've ever seen, every thing is perfect.
I give this character :thumbsup::thumbsup:.

So you are responsable for filling up all the lab 1 screens with renders of this guy ;). The render I've seen as a screensavers on the VFS computers was looking amazing man, really enjoyable style. Best of luck with finishing up your demo reel, I'll be there thursday to cheer for your finished product =]
