Impressions of PS3 demo titles:

E3 2005: Getaway PS3 Shown
Real-time rendering of Getaway shown.

Right now at Sony's E3 2005 press conference, the president of Sony Entertainment Europe is showing The Getaway on PS3. Details are still coming in, but the early word is that the thing is bloody amazing and looks like no digital recreation of London ever has. While the demonstration was devoid of driving or shooting, the game did display some incredible character models walking about a highly detailed English environment. Now, if only the power of PS3 can work out that poor camera just a bit. They also ran the computer generated Spider-Man model from the actual Spider-Man 2 movie in real-time on PS3. Amazing.

E3 2005: Spider-Man PS3 Demo
The Amazing web-slinger is demo'ed on the amazing console.

May 16, 2005 - Activision has already confirmed that Spider-Man 3 (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/684/684224.html) would ship on next-generation consoles, but at Sony's 2005 E3 press conference today, we got to see a real-time Spidey doing his thing.

The character was amazingly detailed, so detailed in fact that we suspected he was from the last Spider-Man 2 movie. In fact, he was. Sony claims that the PS3 is so powerful it can run the computer generated Spider-Man from the movie in real-time, which may or may not be the actual character from the next game. More details to follow.

That spiderman footage looked totally comp'd. The lighting even didn't match. It looked like they just took the Spiderman footage from the movie and overlayed it on the CG of that racing game. In fact I bet none of that was real time at all...

Anyone saw the new Zelda trailer at gametrailers.com? Looks great but uh why does Link morph into a wolf in a black&white colored world with a dude with a hand growing out of his head riding him?

BTW MGS4 is supposedly set years after MGS2 (Snake has a full beard) and I don't know about the poster I saw on IGN but it looks like Big Boss is back, unless it's Solidius again.

That's not Solidus......Solidus had a patch over his LEFT eye. Big Boss has an eyepatch over his RIGHT eye.

Can't wait to hear more info on MGS4.....MGS is my fave game series.

Grrrrr...Blizzard was listed as a "First Look" on the E3 site....I was thinking it would be a diablo or even better Starcraft 2! But noooo....there really was no first look other than the "new" build of SC Ghost....which IMO looks like just as much crap as the last one just shiny! The cinematic was nice, but the actual game is just plain...SHIT! It is cartoony like WoW on top of everything else. What happened to Blizzard, why are they nothing but trash anymore? The release of Diablo 2 marked the downhill progression of Blizzard and now they are near hitting rock bottom. They seem too much in the mindset of money they don't care what their games look like or how their 'fans' even think...

GAH! Sorry guys I just had to vent...I know there is alot more to vent about, but I will save that for later. God I hope Blizzard changes back to their old ways of quality over all else.

P.S.~ The storyline is most likely going to be just as bad as WoW's!

I'm not there, but can anyone who is confirm that there's actual, playable games being shown this year?

Becuase what I'm noticing, from following the stuff online, is that most of the stuff being shown aren't actualy games. Making a real time cinematic with your engine isn't showing off your game. And people are falling for it(?). No offence to anyone who's invloved in these titles, but please, set the record straight if I'm wrong.

Cases in point:

-Fight Night 3
The video of the presentation shows two increadibly detailed fighters slugging it out. Unless EA has made some huge leaps in animation blending, and incorporated a simulation system like Endorphine, it ain't real. They're not drawing the crowd in the scene. Every punch is different and no two are repeated in a row. It's not a recording of two people playing, or even a couple of bots from the looks of it. I swar they just mocapped two guys in the ring and are playing it back in an engine.
It that's true, it's pretty f'ing cheap. It's not a represation of what the game will be like. Saying "This is what our game might look like" shouldn't be acceptable. If it's just a tech demo, it should be presented as "Boxing Game Tech Demo" not Fight Night 3.

-Gears of War. Sure looks pretty, but it's all scripted. Let's see what the AI does and how the game moves when there's a player behind the wheel.

-Killzone PS3, same deal. This is so scripted there doesn't seem to be any actual gameplay.

-Battlefield 2 Not so much aimed at this year's E3, but last year's. The video they premired had so much post effects work added with Shake or After Effects it's not funny. Motion blur, camera shake, heat distortion. Stock explosions, fire and smoke comped in. I've seen the near-finished product and it doesn't (and never did) do these things.

My point is, they're supposed to be showing GAMES. E3 isn't a machinima film festival. If your game isn't playable, it's shouldn't be at E3 on display. This is just one of the things I hate about what's happened to the game industry over the past 5-10 years.

E3 is an Entertainment Expo not just a game expo. It is by far the best place to display the console and its future. Most of the game developers for PS3 and XBOX has been doing things only for months. How do you expect a complete game from that. Everything they played there is either realtime played right there or previously played and rendered out or cg rendered out. You can't expect to have a playable game in your hand in 2 months.

They are only showing the graphical/expected power of the system, not the complete gaming experience. Anything more, you have to buy the systems.

Whether it is games, systems, software, or anything that relates to games will be there in E3 not just playable games. If you just want playable games then just wait until they put that onto the shelf and stop looking at those demos.

Maverick3d: It's a game the companies play though. If they show stuff that is amazing.. scripted or not.. fmv or not... it still makes MORE hype and talk for the title. That's all they want! If after you bought it you realized that was no realtime, then you lost. They still got your money.

What's up with StarCraft: Ghost? In some places its textures and polycount make it look like it's an N64 title! And the physics...ugh. The ship crashing in the beginning and those vehicles flipping at the end...terrible. Really ruins the immersion for me. :(

A neat report regarding Oblivion can be found here (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/theelderscrollsivoblivion/preview_6125686.html)

The game's characters not be highly scripted but will instead use the game's "Radiant AI" system, which will give them a rough daily schedule, a few specific goals, some personal needs (such as the need to eat and the need to sleep), then basically turn them loose in the world. We watched an example in which we entered a bookstore and chatted up the storekeeper using the game's diplomacy skill (which has been changed from Morrowind to a circle onscreen that lets you move your cursor between options like joke or threaten; the character you're speaking to will react accordingly with facial animations). The bookkeeper seemed to prefer jokes and smiled when told them, then invited us upstairs to keep her company. The bookkeeper then went about one of her general goals--training in archery by firing arrows at a hanging target in her room, while her enthusiastic dog leapt about the room. The bookkeeper's aim was off, so she voluntarily quaffed a marksmanship potion, which improved her aim considerably. She also tossed her hungry dog a cut of venison, which affected the excited quadruped in much the same way it would affect a player. The dog then got so excited that the short-tempered bookkeeper cast a paralysis spell on her pet, causing it to tumble to the floor. The bookkeeper then attempted to lie down and go to sleep, but her dog recovered and began yapping excitedly again, so the impatient bookkeeper cast a fire spell on her poor pooch, setting the dog on fire and sending it yelping from the room. After the bookkeeper lay down for the evening and nodded off, we helped ourselves to the two-handed claymore sword on her table and departed for the besieged town.

I am so underwhelmed by quake IV its not even funny.. all that amazing conceptart and highres models and then they decide to make it look exactly like Doom3 (only less cool). Theres no quake-feel at all in what ive seen so far. They should really have called it something else :(

quakewars look much more original for id, but still have no quake-feel at all. (IMO)
