View Full Version : Texturing with normal maps
rtdzign 05-15-2005, 08:14 PM Is there anything that I should do differently when texturing a normal mapped objects? I am about to practice texturing a character that has a normal map, and I've been told to not paint fake shadows and highlights since that would conflict with the lighting information given off with the normal map. Is there anything else that I should look out for?

One can't say to leave out all shadows and highlights. Unless you also do per-pixel speculars it'll still be useful with some strategically placed dabs of paint. It takes some trial and error so just go ahead :)

I typically remove all specular from the color map, it fights too much with the "real" specular coming from the dynamic lighting. I also trive to remove any hard shadows. Many artists add a little ambient occlusion to the color map, it really helps the surface "pop," especially if you're working on a game asset where the lighting solution is usually not very robust.
Some tips in the Game WIP section...
