I'm very new to Maya and 3d animating in general. What I'm trying to do is animate a sealion bouncing a ball on his nose. The modeling and skeleton work is all done and no I am animating. (This will be sort of hard for me to explain) I made the ball be parented to the nose of the seal, when I move a cluster node for the seal and he bends down the ball follows him. The problem is once it goes down it won't come up unless I manually move it, and that just makes it be off in another frame. So what happens is:

I set keys for the seal and ball
I bend the seal down and set a key for him only, but the ball follows him (like I want it to)
I bend the seal back up to set another key and the ball doesn't follow. It just stays where I set the last key.

What am I doing wrong?

Edit: Another thing is that the balls node stays with the sealions node just fine, just the ball visually isn't there.

I don't know what's causing your problem, but perhaps it would be better to use constraints instead of parenting.

You can constrain the ball to both a node near the nose, and a node off in space, like a locator. Then you can animate the weights of both the constraint on his nose and the constraint in the air.

why dont you just parent the ball under the cluster instead of the nose?
