View Full Version : what a fun chain of nulls

doesn't this hierarchy chain look fun? i have to make my worm character scooting along uneven ground, only he does so in a staggered fashion, and i have no choice but to keyframe this. just gonna toggle Parent In Place on and off and toggle parenting with the worm for each sequential null in this chain, and place keyframes. a painful workaround, but didn't really have a choice, i guess.
off to go bend that chain over the ground now.

Lol (but not really lol)
This is why curve deformation tools are for, unfortunatly they appear not to work in LW....

didn't take me too long to arrange them, but here's the result.
the way the worm moves is staggered forward movement, and a morph in which the tail contracts:
frame 0: position 0, morph 0%
frame 7: position 0, morph 100%
frame 10: position +300mm, morph 0%
and then this repeats with 17, 20, 27, 30, etc.
what i have to do is reset the worm's position to the origin, and parent it to Null 1. go to frame 0, turn Parent In Place on (i set a kb shortcut for it), and unparent, which automatically creates a keyframe, then copy that keyframe forward 7 frames. rinse and repeat (with frame 10 and Null 2, etc).
tedious, but it's easy to define the points at which he stops and does other things. and i don't have time to experiment with/learn better ways. i would've used bones and IK, but we're not supposed to use IK in this project (bummer).
this would have been insane if it weren't for Parent In Place and the ability to change parenting with Ctrl-LMB in the schematic view.
