View Full Version : Killer Bush: My first 3D animation reel
unapimper 05-15-2005, 05:10 PM Hey guys, I am a complete newbie who has recently graduated in a 6-month Maya training course, I knew nothing about 3D animation before that, and now this is the culmination of my 6-month study. I will be trying to apply for jobs with this, and I need some opinions and criticisms! Thanks for watching! Feedback as much as you want!

hmm, did you storyboard this first? it kinda seems like u had a few ideas of some cool moves and put them together into an animation. some things i would work on, the walking and running looks wayy to unnatural, theres no sort of flow in the timing, when bush is running towards osama it looks like he's stomping down on the ground, another thing his head is tilted wayy to far up it looks unnatural, i would show more of them fighting and actually choreograph the fight scene. if you dont know any martial arts go to a martial arts dojo and ask them if they can help you out. if it's a student project all it really means is that you have to add them into the credits. i would just suggest putting more research into motion, and the weapons. i know it's cool to hold sai with the fingers inside but, a sai was used to catch a sword, hence the hook things on either side, if your catching a sword in there you wouldn't want ur fingers there to get chopped.

I agree with the above poster. The part where Bush is running looks like he's stomping on the ground. Also about the part where he's running and his head is tilted up, I know I've seen some scenes (mostly in anime) where the character runs similar to the pose you had Bush in, if that's your intent then it seems to me that he's running too slow to warrant that type of stance so you might want to take that into consideration.

yeah running motion could me made more realisitc - no doubt about it...
but I mention something I did really like... the camera movement as they swing their weapons after running at each other.
Nice work - I hope I get this good in 6 months :)

Heya,
Firstly i'd like to say that for 6 months of training and zero knowledge on animation before that, this is awesome. I've seen graduates who can't animate half as well.
Here are my critiques:
Your characters didn't blink (i think) when they were talking and they lacked eye movements. That sorta makes viewers uncomfortable. Well it did for me at least :P
When bush was walking towards osama (when his name "Killer Bush" first appears) the walk was really awkward cos you had his left arm forward the same time his left leg is forward and same for the right.
I thought your poses could be more dynamic...instead of keeping Bush standing straight, he might adopt some ninja stance when he says "go home and die". And yeah i agree with the others about making the runs way faster...even apply motion blur to give the illusion of speed.
When i look at your reel i'm actually thinking animation for games....i suppose if you wanna apply for a character animation position, you might try a different story. You already have these 2 famous chars you could do a lot of comedy with. Just a suggestion :)
Keep working on it man, for a beginner this is great stuff.

Definately looks good for 6 months of Maya. The running looks pretty heavy and stompy, like previously said. This thing kinda leave you hanging and it'd be real nice to see more in the fight. I really liked the perspective camera shots from the eyes of Bush and Osama.

ok I just watched it. I like the idea. I am also graduating from Ai in Chicago and I will say I've seen way worse from graduting kids. but were was your footroll you ankles stayed still pretty much. no blinking. but i can tell you how to fix it and make it funnyer. give them bubble heads. that anaimtion would go great with it you wouldent have to do anything but give them bigger heads.
