View Full Version : rock generator, anyone?
vicky_1 05-15-2005, 05:34 AM Hi all!
Wasn't there a script for generating random shaped rocks somewhere.
Can anyone help me find it? Or are u veterans using some simple option in maya that i obviously have no clue of?:scream:

hehe, a bitchy method i use is like this:
make a polygonal sphere
assign a jiggle deformer to the sphere
set the time range in timeline to 0-1000
start Interactive Playback (i think it's in maya 6.0+)
select the sphere and, with the move tool, start dragging it up and down like a jackass and whatch how it's deformed
delete the history of the sphere, and eventually smooth or average the vertexes
that's all

there is a paint effects brush in the visor>paint effects>object mesh>StoneBroken and StonePebbles. I made a quick rocky scene example by creating a NURBS plane shaped quickly with the sculpt brush and after I made it paint effects >make paintable, it took me about 30 seconds to spread all those rocks all over the terrain in the image below. I have s Wacom stylist and the pen pressure was defining the various sizes of the rocks while brushing over the hills.
The stones come with the default texture but you can convert all or some to polys and add your own texturing and or additionally edit each individual rock if you want.
