So, I saw this image in a comic the other day and it just stuck in my head. It was of the new batgirl as a child during her training drawn by Ale Garza. Ale Garza characters are always immediately recognizable to me and always have these very interesting trademark physiques. I saw so much strength in this tiny child and thought, WOW, that is so bad ass!
So here we are. I don't know the exact direction I'm going with this character, but this image (to me at least) says a thousand words on where I could go with it. The image is just inspiration, the design will be based on it but not an exact copy. I'm going to be working on this in my spare time, so updates will come. Make sure to check in a see how the progress is going.

She's only nine and a bit Tom Boyish. I'm going to make it a bit more obvious that she is a girl. Obvious I cant throw breast on her, but I'll figure it out.

the arms are fine... shes a girl and girls actually have sausage biceps im not kidding i just had a quick look at my girl friends hand .. there sausages.. the only reason it might look wierd is cause there are no fore arms .. and you have to rememebr this model isnt realistic its gotta stay fantasy like and stick to the concept therefore muscles etc still need to look good but not realistic.. so dont change those biceps, it looks good.. it look right for the style your going for.. but then again thats my suggestion ... :) see you soon mate..
Geta-Ve
05-20-2005, 06:09 AM
hmmm. definatly can tell its a girl, but I think with that hair-do shes coming off a bit frenchy.. maybe thats the point? :p hrm.. Also I would try to soften her up a bit. What I mean is that like with the neck and face and biceps especially is the details seem a bit TOO modeled in, you know? I would go for a more subtle approach, just to give it more of that female touch.
one more thing, I would elongate the face just slightly, it seems to short in comparison to her neck.. :)
Though thats just my opinion i think.
Anyways, keep up the good work man!

05-20-2005, 11:01 AM
Thanks guys!
Those suggestions are all things I was taking into consideration to maybe revise. I
was thinking at such a young age (think young gymnast) somtimes theres is a blur between male and female features, except when you see hair. I do think you have a ppoint, but it's a delicate balance because I tried to soften it up a bit and she iended up looking older and "sexier' than I really wanted her to for a kid. That being said, I'll play around a bit with it.
The arms:
I actually modeled the muscle in first time around and she look too "jacked Up". Like a 9 year old on steroids. Again you have to walk a fine line with a young character, because for the most part especially on girls the biceps won't really be visibale unless the are like Serana Williams or something. They could use some work, but I don't want to go over bored. I also think they''ll look better when you can see fore arms.
Thanks for all of the great suggestions. I hope this weekend I can knock out the rest of the body and model some different hair looks.

I'm changing the hair and moving it away from her face.
Similar to this guys hair in this sketch. (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=40385)
He's a wonderful artist I happened to come across today on Conceptart.org.
I think this style may be easier to work with. That being said, If I can make the original hair work, you might still see it.
Thanks for all of the support guys! Family stuff has settled down now that the baby is here and healthy, so I can get a little more focused on this again. Also seeing my niece has given me a ton of motivation to have cool stuff to show her when she's old enough to know what's going on.

Hey, congratulations man!
Phuzion ROCKS! I love his style so much. That place is a daily inspiration. As to the girl, I get the feeling her proportions are off, but that might be the angle I'm seeing it from, because the shoulders and hips seem to have a huge difference in scale. Perhaps her body is too small for her head... not sure.
dmonk
05-25-2005, 12:17 AM
Your actually right about her upper body compared to her lower body. I'll correct that tonight and post.
Her head is actually supposed to be too big for her head though, it was sort of a style choice.
But good looking out though. I going for cartoon, but the proportions still have to work.;)
I'll post an update later tonight.

Don't worry you don't sound like a bastard. I really am open to all input, good or bad. It can only help. SO keep the suggestions coming! You might suggest something that could make or break this little project I'm doing.
Do you mean that it should be more like the sketch?
Well I really am just using the sketch for inspiration I never wanted to flat out copy it, I'm more just trying to get the same feeling with my character.
What areas do you think I can improve on?
Are you saying it should be like Andy's Style?
Well I'm trying to develope my on style, but Andy is the man.:D
Hehe each time you post a new part, I think "hmm something looks really a bit wierd", then the next time you show it, all those things will be cleared up hehe, I guess it's how you work (roughing out ahead and then adding detail?) or sommat. The character is starting to really depart from the original (very very boyish in 1st post, now successfully looks older too :) ) concepts both, which is cool because the person in there somewhere must be developing ;) I know what Lucas is saying about the departing from concept thing, but it looks more like character development to me ^_^
Erm, Is it really cheeky to ask what sortof primitives or other basis you start out the locks of hair from? I'm doing me first human atm and it's proving a touch of a hellish nightmare to get going on that part... you made them with a nice kinda look which I can't quite work out the shape of before subd in my mind, but been trying for. V sorry for the beg/OT :D

Yeah, I think you get what I'm doing. I want to make something that is identifiable as something I made, instead of looking at it and saying hey that looks like a character by "so and so", I want people to say hey "that looks like a dmonk character". For me it's just like a lot of comic artists, I pull from all of the artists that inspire me but at the end of the day I'm trying to have my own unique style eventually.
I have no interest in creating more of the same when it's my personal stuff.
I very much rough out parts and then go in and refine things after staring at the model for a while and deciding what feels right. Critiques and comments help me a lot, because I can get a new perspective on something. The only thing is Sometimes following every suggestion can take you too far away from what you were actually personally going for to begin with.
I think when I get further along, it will start to make more sense. (hopefully)
I hate doing hair and wish I just had a hair plugin or XSI advance. I used to use XSI's hair system at the university, before I got setup at home with foundation. It's a bitch for render times, but you can get some nice results if you work on it. I have only sculpted hair a few times and I'm not too thrilled with this attemp, but I' m going to keep at it. I usually start from a section of the models head and build and extrude off of it. Nothing fancy. I'm positive their are better and more efficient ways to go about it.
This Guy's (http://www.xsibase.com/forum/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=19120;start=45) hair is what I want to go for. So I'm really going to try and pull it off.
The Sword: that's the easy part and it's coming:thumbsup: .

your character is very creative, and nice modeled, but the hair appears a little plastic, try to make it using shag hair, hair fx, octaria, or others, if you cannot use this ones, aplly some thin-striped map to the specular level at hairs material, i believe that will make it a little better
good work:thumbsup:

I think the dark works quite well! I'm still a little thrown by her proportions. Even for her child-like size, she probably needs either a shorter torso or a longer set of legs.
This is progressing famously Dmonk! :D

IMHO i dont think leather would work.. leather is usually left for sexy older more mature characters with attitude.. this is a very young girl your talking about here.. wouldn't fit the original character you were after.. after all imho the original outfit worked quiet well.. but once again that is my opinion.. see how you go mate.. great update..

The Outfit: I like the black, but I'll go back to the white top for now. I'm going to make a few different looks for her though once everythingis said and done.
Proportions: I was playing around with her torso and legs for the longest, my wif kept saying something was off and she couldn't put her finger on it. I think I'm going top lower her knees and add some length to her lower legs. I attempted this earlier and some how she just seemed way to tall, but that could be because her legs where slightly thicker earleir on. I give it a go. Thanks for the input!

kk.. sooo here are my crits
the arms in proportion to the WHOLE body look too long.. or perhaps too big. I am seeing that with your style man your characters tend to take an upside down triangle effect, being that the top most of your characters are really big then you graduallt get smaller as you move down the body.
Like right now the width of the shoulds and such look way to big compared to her tiny waist and even tinier feet.
Since this is a girl I would probably excentuate the waist just a bit more, not enough that guys hang her poster on their wall, but enough that you can say ya shes a girl, ESPECIALLY if your going to keep the shoulder width as long as it is.
Another thing that I find a turn off about her is the space between her legs. . . Makes her look very alien and weird in my opinion.
What I might do for a character like this is grab the legs+feet+waist (up to maybe the belly button) and move it all up, thus shortening the waist/chest but retaining the length of the arms+legs.
These style of characters, which you find often in anime, tend to have short short chests with long legs and arms.
Also compared to the feet the head seems pretty big. and compared to the shoulders seems only SLIGHTLY big. soo I'd thicken/widen those thights and reduce the space in between her legs, then give her bigger feet (and shorter ankles) and then reduce the size/mass of her head just slightly. Oh and like I said bring the legs+feet upwards to shorten the chest/abdomen area.
One other thing, looking at the length of the arms overall the fingers seem way too short. A solution could be to shorten the forarm (lower arm) to give you more room to lengthen her fingers.
Other than that, I say keep rounding her off as she looks still a bit boxy and squarish, however the face does look younger this time, though not as young as I would have thought you were going for.
Keep up the great work man! and I apologize if I was harsh, but these were just things that stuck out at me, take em or leave em :p

I didn't find it to be harsh at all. I think you make valid points. The thing is the minute I start thinking about "correct proportions" or "how it should" look it's just going to become something completly different from what I want it to become.
Don't take that the wrong way, because I'm not saying that your wrong at all. The feet could be bigger and the fingers could be longer etc etc. I am going to look into it and probably make some changes.
I think too often in 3d people don't allow for the freedom that 2d artists have. I notice that so many characters that people model a lot of the times just end up looking like clones of other peoples work. Sometimes I think people don't allow any room for looseness in a design. I'm not saying I'm the best designer, but I'm trying to get there and evolve my own style.
Look at it this way Humberto Ramos and Sean Galloway (comic artists, two of my favorites) have completely off proportions and physiques, but they work and they appeal to me. Technically "Realistic" modeling is very commendable and it's easy to see when something is well done. As a personal preference though I find them boring and not to my tastes. Anime as well, everything starts to look the same.
As far as anime that I do like. Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop have all of the traditional elements of anime, but something about the design is a little off and make the character design stick out to me.
Sorry for the long rant Geta and I hope you don't take it the wrong way. I just see too many people telling others wha their design should look like and your comments weren't what sparked my little rant. I saw a comment on someone elses character that jus rubbed me the wrong way.
Cheers and i'll get back to work later tonight.

no worries man! :) I completely understand where your coming from. :)
Some times too I find that the standard T pose (or what not) that we model characters in tend to not give the right idea as to how the character will look. because alot of times they work well when animated.
So, I trust your judgement :)
Because ya when I was writing it I was thinking to myself "oh he might get pissed at me cuz this is just stuff that I would do if it were my model" hence the little blurb at the end. heh.
Cant wait for updates!

I like the mesh topology, nice and clean, should deform nicely.
only one suggesion around the mouth. the upper lip seems too soft so i'd thrown in another edge or something to define the lip shape. I'm not sure but i think even a small 'nook' at the corners of the mouth would add to the expressiveness of the face. I just painted on your previous post to illustrate what i was thinking.

Looks really good so far, though i think the legs are a bit bubous in places and could do with being a little longer to balance out the proportions. Maybe even model some creases, detail and folds in the cloth.
I really love the head though - it instantly looks asian and young.

Looks really good so far, though i think the legs are a bit bubous in places and could do with being a little longer to balance out the proportions. Maybe even model some creases, detail and folds in the cloth.
I really love the head though - it instantly looks asian and young.
Some good comments by geta-ve by the way
Keep it up!
Thanks Andy.
By bubous do you mean that they can be thinned out a bit? I thought Getsa's comments were excellent and I actually have made some of those changes. I feel like everytime I go into the scene I'm actually making her legs longer and longer.
I did make here feet beigger and worked on her face looking at the image alexokita provided. I am going to model in some creases, I started doing that last weekm but I went over board.
I will have a major update soon, but the last week and a half have been unexpectedly busy, on top of a few long days at my day job.

Wow I hate I missed this one  Excellent job Dmonk and way to stick with your concept! The character is awesome! Is there any chance for it to be rigged and or animated? Very cool....

Definitely, I have every intention of animating with this character. That being said I'm not exactly an animator so my attempts might be rubbish, but who knows.
Sorry I haven't updated in a while. I have a couple of things going on that are holding up work on this (day job and a couple of new oppurtunities).
I've actually been trying out the toon shader for this character, but haven't been too happy with my results. I took all the suggestions into account an works on the feet, face and proportions.
Maybe this weekend I'll post and update. Depending how my schedule is I might do some rigging by next weekend.
Thanks for the input!:D

Wow, Sorry about the long time since the last update.
I'm up for a new job doing graphic design (Lots of portfolio stuff for 3rd interview). I'm also teaching myself after effects at home, for some motion graphic stuff I might be doing in the near future. Pls, my wife is going to Korea for a few weeks so we've been getting a lot of stuff in order.
Since the character just needs texturing a some minor updates,I was holding off until I got Zbrush and a wacom, but since I have a week off soon. I'll work on texturing and rigging her up. I also added some thickness to her hair sort of like Andy's office hottie.
I actually found Geta and Andy's comments quite motivating, more to come once things slow down a bit on my end.

All in time. I have a whole week and a half of freedom coming up next week. So I'll have plenty of time to focus on this the way I want to.

I was finally able to get back to this. With a little free time. Don't laugh too much at my horrible texture work it's just a start.
