im using max 7
rendering a fire effect
using mental ray
have to use final gather because i am using a sky light

got 3 explosions in the scene

ive got 3 pf sources for the sparks and debri..
got another 3 for the actual flames
and got a p array exploding for extra particles

now when i render with the normal scan line render no lights it renders fine

when i use mental ray..
final gather 200
motion blor enabled

it comes up with error msg while rendering

it is something similar to (Sorry not infront of my work computer now)
maxdefault active shader calculating illumination from illegal point...(some numbers)..final gather no possible)

it still rebnders but some of the scene comes out too light

can annyone help me solve this..i was up till 5 in the morning hiding some of the pf sourse ..deleting the lights and trying different variations

i know when i linked a pf sourse to a obect and tried to move it..the same error msg came up ..but i have no done the same with this scene

i will try and get screen dumps up for u to take a look soon

sounds by the error message like it's having an issue with whatever material (shader) you put on your particles...? Is it self illuminating or anything?

yep the fire is illuminating
as well as the sparks
havnt ried it without self illumination but im guessing that since its fire and sparks it wont look right

well if there's a ton of particles, mr might have a hard time trying to calculate the light from all of the particles or something like that. I honestly wouldn't know for sure, but you should post the file to see if anybody else has the same issue ---edit: and if it's fire, you can always use a self illuminated material (as long as it doesn't emit light) and use an omni light to fake it, and use the filter option in the material to fake the glow from particles overlaying each other and such : check out allanmckay.com for his fire tutorial and you'll get the idea for the materials at least. I don't know how he would go about lighting it, but you can always email him. --or post in the particle flow discussion under max resources :)
