Latest Update: Final Image: eye detail

something that changed a lot through the whole process was the gazes and direction of the eyes. in the first sketch two sets of eyes were closed - trying to give a sense of extasy - but I thought it better that as the sirens surround the hero (in an oval - also reinforced by the hair) with their expressions and eyes leading toward the center concentrating on their desire to seduce him

My entry for the challenge looks at the idea of Master and Servant from a slightly different point of view. I prefer to tell a story where the roles alternate. The inspiration for an image comes from Homer’s Epic story The Odyssey at the point where Odysseus passes the island of the Sirens and Odysseus has been forewarned by the sorcerer Circe that the Sirens’ song will draw the men to their death on the rocks of the island. Odysseus tells the crew to cover their ears, while he himself is tied to the mast, so that he might listen, yet not be seduced. I portray the hero of the epic at the mercy of the Sirens, suffering, struggling to get free – he is servant of their enchanting call. Although, if we look at the bigger picture our understanding of roles change. As he has prepared for the challenge he is the master of the situation, even though helpless and tied up, and eventually is master of his destiny.

I started with this assembly of different character sketches which led to an idea of a possible composition.

Here are the first colours to set up one of the Siren face and expression. Eventually though there will be a big change later on (sooner the better) in order to get all the colours working together and to set the overall movement through the composition and with the other characters.

Here's a closer look at one of the three Siren's with a little more work put into the face.

Thanks TM! Looks like we have our work cut out for us in the next few days! Still have a long way to go get the mood and the expressions I want in the sirens faces.

and she begins to take on flesh, she is warmer than siren 1 since she is in the foregound, though we will see what happens to colours later when I have the puzzle's pieces. This is the first time painting figures in photoshop so things are going slow

Lovely coloring, very soft and delicate :) I have to say also that your concept sketch is awesome, great technique in this alone as well :) Good luck!

Thanks BlacKeri, the only thing is that later on the colours might change. At the moment everything is a little fragmentary, when I begin to pull things together there might be too much colour so I might tone in down or do something radically different. Who knows. I like where yours is going very much, the concept is strong and emotional, touching. Good luck to you too!

This shows all of the characters roughed in, though there is a lot to do to pull the composition together and detail enhance the expressions on the faces of the sirens. The composition has become tighter since the departure with the rough sketch so that we can participate more closely in the emotions of the characters.

This is the final version of my Master and Servant entry. This, my second ever painting in photoshop, is an image that shows a moment when Odysseus, in the epic story The Odyssey, is at the center of a psychological battle with the Sirens. He looks out, concentrating desperately to fight against the calls of the sirens, who will try to seduce him to his death on the rocks of their island. At this moment, he is struggling and helpless, he is securely tied to the mast of his ship while his crew members cover their ears - the sirens appear to be the masters, summoning their enchanting call to overcome his will. It is a transient and momentary relationship. Odysseus is not overcome and goes on to be master of his destiny. Dynamic power relationships at the heart of our stories are now thousands of years old.

The cropped image in the detail sent previous to this image, shows a close-up of one of these intense entranced gazes where a Siren seems almost to look through Odysseus, overwhelmed by emotion; they surround him with their bodies moving in a dynamic dance-like composition. Odysseus fights with all his will to avoid their enchantment and looks within himself for the for the might to withstand - all is illuminated in a flash of mistic light that that seems could vanish in a moment together with the Sirens.

Hey man. this is very nice! I havent seen this one. the rendering is very nice!. the glare in the top adds a nice touch to the girl. gives her alot of purity. congrats on your second painting ever. this also is my introduction to painting, well in a way. ive dont textures and have a comic style of coloring but non of those techniques use the same principles of paint application as traditional. well talk to you later!
