View Full Version : Hash A:M export
nemyax 05-14-2005, 06:21 AM Which version of Wings last had a working Hash A:M exporter? I want to learn A:M, but I find its modelling features atrocious, so I want to see if it would be easier to do the modelling in Wings.
My other question is, does the spline flow need much correction in A:M after import from Wings?

I'm using 0.98.26 and it works fine.
I know how frustrating A:M can be for modelling sometimes. What version of A:M are you using ? A lot of the surface irregularities can be smoothed out using the "porcelain" material.
Supposedly A:M is " the best there is ". I haven't tested this though ( too lazy to re-learn a new animation program ).
It seems each brand of program has its religious followers which brag about it being " the best."
( Personally, I have my doubts....but would be delighted to indeed be using "the best app.".)
From the few seconds I have played around using Wings, it does seem as though it would be faster to model with. It it the slow workflow that turns you off to A:M ?
I'll try to post something from Wings to A:M / A:M to Wings

Thanks for the reply. I'm using (or rather, trying to use) version 10.5. I'm mainly interested in the animation side of things. As for the modelling, I put down Martin Hash's childish propaganda to marketing strategy. I'm fairly familiar with 3ds max's animation interface and would like to know how the 2 apps compare in this respect. I hear there's been some interchange of ideas between Hash and Pixar.
I'll try to post something from Wings to A:M / A:M to Wings
Do you mean I could get to see some of your work? That would be sweet.

Nemyax : Sorry for the delay. I tried modelling something in Wings and bringing it into A:M.
It seems to work pretty well so far.
I'll have to get back with you later this week. I'm pretty busy.
A quick - easy - question : What are the hotkeys for changing the views ( Left,Right, Top etc ) in Wings ?

A quick - easy - question : What are the hotkeys for changing the views ( Left,Right, Top etc ) in Wings ?
X, Y, Z
to look along the specified axis
Shift-X, Shift-Y, Shift-Z
to look along the specified axis (in the opposite direction)

Thanks for the reply !
Where can I find a ( total noob ) beginners tutorial in video form - one that does not use any hot keys to confuse the viewer ?
I'm a 'show me" kind of learner. ( also my printer is down, so I cant print the manual )
I have played around with Wings for a few minutes yesterday and think this is going to be one hell of a useful program !
In Animation :Master, you literally draw the mesh out point by point , so it is very easy ( but very slow ) to have the mesh shaped like the muscle structure of the face.
In a poly program such as Wings, how do you control the overall structure of the mesh ?
Do you shape the mesh but selecting each point and moving it around ?
I downloaded a couple of tuts on modeling a face in Wings, but it looks like they use hot keys in it. One of the tuts doesn't show the tools at all.
I think I'm really going to like this program a lot.

Vegan,
Wings is a box modeller. Box modelling is essentially different from "assembly" modelling. It's closer to the way a sculptor works. First you roughly define the overall volume, then you define the flow of edges, and then you add the remaining detail.
In addition to vertices, you work with edges and faces. As a spline modeller, you will probably want to rely more on vertex tweaking, extruding and the Connect tool at first. Other tools will get added to your arsenal as you discover their advantages.
Spend a few hours simply studying the effect of available commands on vertices, edges and faces. See what body mode commands do. And keep looking at the help line at the bottom. It's there for every tool.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but I've found a great little patch modelling program called hamaPatch. I'll use that for modelling and export. Thanks for help.

You may have a bit of a problem in Wings. Wings uses alot of shortcuts as well as the right click menu to do most of the things you need to do.
I would suggest that you not worry to much about this since if you hit the Insert key then a key on the keyboard you can reassign tools so they make sense to you. You can easily match the AM keys in Wings.
In AM you are constantly in a tweak mode so to do the same kind of tweaking of points, faces or CPs(vertices in wings) then look for the tweak tool. I assigned it to a key since I am in that mode so much but you can find it in the top menus.
When exporting your model to AM if you tighten it about 30% you will get the smooth version of your model in AM with no distortion. This is if you subdivide your model to smooth it.
