Hi tried this in the hardware forum but no joy, wonder if anyone here could help

Hi I've just bought a new PC with a Quadro 1400 PCI Express, I just not that impressed with my viewport performance in 3dsMax, I use lightwave and XSI mainly and they seem great but I use max at work so thought I'd compare them, I use a geforce 440 something or other at work, using opengl drivers and it is only slightly slower than my home pc.
I tried opengl at home but it's pretty much unuseable, I've also tried maxtreme which seemed quicker than direct3d so I was resonably satisfied.

Until I open the sample_animation file that comes with max 7 on the samples disk under samples->Crowd->Sample_Animation. Press play to preview the animation and it runs at about half a frame per second.

Surely the sample files should easily run on a fairly powerful brand new system. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal performance for this scene.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Probably not a good benchmark, that scene may be solving for a crowd system, you know AI like scripts.. Anyway something to explore.

Ok cheers, just seems wierd they would give away a sample file away that shows what you can do with the software, but you need a amazing pc to look at it. Also does anyone know why opengl is so slow with this card.

Cheers

Dude, I have an bottom of the heap fx1000 on a 3 year old dell 8300 and it's friggin fast as hell! You should NOT use OpenGL - use directX or use maxtreme7. Yes, Max is no speed demon in the viewport speed area, but even with big models (100k polys) I can work NO PROBLEMS!

Ok I know I seems like I'm whinging a bit because others are doing amazing stuff much worse systems but I just wanted to check everything was working ok because it's new, and coming from macs I don't really know what is normal.

Thing is I am using maxtreme and that scene is slow as hell, if you're saying that scene runs fine on you system then I am assuming something is wrong with mine. If you're not saying that then I'm happy because of as LS3d said it's probably not a good benchmark because it's a very complex scene. Just surprises me discreet would give away such a complex scene with MAX
