Hey Everyone! Our studio wants to get into HD work in After Effects, but because we are new to it we are having problems import the HD video into After Effects. We got it to work in Premiere Pro 1.5, but how about AE?

I would render the material out as targa files from premiere. But you will need a big drive to store the on.

You should have no problem importing the HD res targas as sequences in to Afx.

Just make sure that you interpret the footage to 25fps after you imported if you are gong PAL. NTSC is just straight on.

We already figured that way out. We want to edit footage and export as footage. Keep in mind that when you import frames into AE you need to set them up individually. Or do you know of a way to make AE set the duration of still images at 1 frame? Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Anyone else know of how to import HD video into AE?

I have AE 4.something here at work, don't use it much as I prefer other compositing programs... but I assume it's still similar to whatever version of AE you're on. When you import the frames you import them as an image sequence (might be a checkbox in the import footage dialog?). In the preferences you can set the FPS AE sets for the image sequence while importing. So, if you are working with 24 fps material, set the frame rate preference for imported image sequences at 24. Then, import the image sequence - it will be 1 frame per image in AE.

I think using the image sequence will be faster than working with prerendered footage.

I´m not really sure what you mean? Just check the "image sequence" button when you import the tga seq and they behave as one file in afx´s file browser.

But even if you don´t use targas Afx should have no problems to import Quicktimes in animation codec rendered in HDres form premiere.

OK it seems that at this point targa sequences would be best. I'll try this technique out at work tomorrow. Thanks everyone!! :)

Well, you have to be more specific what hardware you are using. I suspect it's simply a CoDec problem - AE is very picky about using certain hardware based ones such as those from Matrox. In such a case converting your footage to image sequences or Quicktime files is normally the way to go.

Thanks for your help everyone. It turns out that one way to do it is to have AE 6.5, using Aspect HD 3.0 for premeire pro 1.5 and AE and everything should work fine. Guess we have to upgrade now.
