Joon Hwan has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Latest Update: Final Image: final image

FINAL IMAGE! done. thanks to all of you who gave my thread the time of day. it is an honor to be part of this challenge with so many other talented artists. it was a lot of fun.

THE STORY:

a town was on the border between two nations, and as such, citizens of both nations lived there. due to the mixed population, the town was a very peaceful but neutral one. the nations were at war, and it forced the town to be a constant target of attack and political conflict. many attempts were made by both nations to at first sway the village to join their cause, but soon evolved into a large scale plan to wipe out the town entirely. the elder had no choice but to ask for the aid of giants whom no one knew really existed.

here, this image depicts the elder beckoning for aid... to help save his people.

Here is the initial concept sketch. The story is something like an old man going to ask a certain group of giants for aid. right now, i still have to work out everything (as this is the concept sketch), but the general feel is about where i would like it in the end.

This is such a pretty piece...you only have 3 days left, you know!

As regards suggestions, I would put in tiny trees and other things to suggest the scale of the smaller woman (since the background seems to be built to the scale of the giants, maybe they did it themselves, who knows?!)
Work....man..work...

Ah, i dont really do line art... but since its a requirement, i thought id do some anatomy studies on one of the giants. experimenting with a different body hunch.

hehe, i kind of liked the line art, so i decided to flesh out the old man more. he wont be naked, but i like to structure the nude body before i put clothing on. just a habit.

Wow love the face mate, I would keep the hair black definately. I love the way you apply the paint and build it up, pretty much like mine, just that mine is alot messier. I love the face though, Looks like a cross between Abraham Lincoln and Wolverine. Very nice concept mate. Good Luck!

working on the bodies now... gotta get the feel right. gah. time...ending....::dead::

all of you, thank you so much for your comments, i greatly appreciate them.

dinodog, im using photoshop only, as painter lags bigtime on my machine. i dont have a real method, its just painting in layers and layers. just describing what you want to describe, thats the beast way i can put it. i find that simplifying my thought process to "ok, this should be darker, so lets paint it darker. this should be lighter and warmer, so lets paint it lighter and warmer" really helps. thats as best as i can put it.

demonicoz, i replied in your thred. cool image!

decided to put some kind of clothing on the middle giant.thinking of giving him some kind of armor, as these giants do fight wars. pondering my next move, so if anyone wants to suggest something please feel free! and as for my method of paint, its just buildup abd buildup. except for that ray of light, i only use one layer, if that helps.

what up belhaven. man this is looking really nice man. the painting as I sed before is perfect in my eye. and also in the other one. im tired. so my opinion with the armor would revolve around the amount basicly. so if the fight alot of wars then they'd all be suited and booted. but if they fight only some times then I would give them armor but it would be sparse and light. leather mostly, that way they could where it as if it were normal clothing, comfortable and all but also it would still protect them. if you only give the middle guy armor then it would state that they my be warriors but the armor that the middle one wears is more ceremonial than any thing; it stands a status symbol distinguishing him from the rest of the rabble. I would not put armor on his head because his hair is one of the main things that distinguishes him from the rest. the cheif being the older seeing that wisdom comes with age. hmmm. I would maybe send it down his back and chest. almost like a vest but with out the sides. like some thing that he could put on and take off quickly. I would do some armor that was plated. something that catches reflects light smoothly. this would also be another reason to show off your duel lighting and add to the slight green tent on the left side of your image. but hey:shrug: thats just me man. nothing that I said may be any help in the state of mind that I am right now.....I uh...think that I got too attached to your picture man. It has alot of history to it, written or not.

Hi Joon. I think you've captured a mid 50's looking guy pretty nicely. Although his body looks much younger. I'd suggest making hi body look more like Hulk Hogan's. Looser flesh over top of the muscles. What you've done so far looks good. Very earthy palette.

ive messed with the color and put made the giant back to his original form. i think his skin color is needed in that area, but later on, i want to try and draw some armor on him.

hey guys, thank you so much. i appreciate the response. i dont think im going to make the skin any more loose, cause ive already made it so and it might take too much time, but if i have some left over, i will definitely experiment. i will definitely go back in and add some plant life. justin sweet is someone who's technical skill i admire. time is SUPA running out. oh my oh my!

heya, i tried to comment on this piece before, but it seems that the comment never made it to the boards for some reason, so i'll just add some thoughts on the final. i really really like all the faces, very lively, if you know what i mean.. and the brushwork looks sweet too, very impressing. i don't really feel the sense of scale tho, the giants are beautifully done, but they just don't look that gigantic to me. other than that, thumbs up for a great piece

very interesting entry. I don't know how you can understand the story by only looking at the pic (i dont know how the entries are judged) so it might work better as illustration? but the last sentence goes well with it.

Anyways, you can clearly see the giants worries in their faces and that they might be willing to help/serve the little man :) emotional piece. good luck

btw, would love to hear your thoughts regarding my (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=222172) piece.. ive heard you're a harsh commenter ;) thx anyway

Sorry, too many details...

I think that...composition wise, your entry has failed as much as it could have.

Although it does remind me of the art from the Scooby Doo cartoons, so that's kind of cool.

This is the most absurd and insulting comment I've seen thus far on CGTalk. It's just sad to be able to express yourself in such manner. Let's just have human respect to each other and if we disagree, fine, just be polite please.

Well first of all I wasn't being serious, but I do admit it sounded better the first time when Belvelan himself made those comments regarding Enayla's work:

these comments made by Belvelan on page 91 at this link:
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?p=2322697#post2322697

"it has failed as much as it can."
"there are waaaaay too many unneccessary details in the figures"

See, I was just using his own words to make a point =p

As far as looking like Scooby Doo art, I stand by my opinion. But hey, Scooby Doo was a pretty good cartoon.

As Belvelan would say -- we're all just being honest, after all, right?

Good luck to everyone in the contest.

Belhaven

yes!!! thats what i want. i want honesty. BRUTE honesty. shred mine to pieces, cause after all is said and done, i will absorb everything and the next piece will be better.

this might sound like sarcasm, but its totally not. i desire the worst of the worst. it will make me beyond strong. if youve got shit to throw at my face, throw it. the next time it wont hit, cause i'll have learned... and thats what im after most.

thanks for your time.

I like it, I like the mood that it invokes. I like the composition. Yet, it still looks to me like a concept sketch. I mean, it's not much evolved from your original concept sketch that you placed on here. Perhaps if you had spent more time refining the image to make a complete painting? Honestly, looks like you got bored with it and just never completed it and threw it up on here.
