Debbie Overstreet has entered the Master and Servant 2D.
Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=7696)
Latest Update: Final Image: Afterward
I am finished! Decided to add the owl and that is mostly all I've worked on today. I did add some more grass on the distant hill and a few scraggly plants. Storyline is updated. This is a journey into the afterlife. For now the main character is sleeping. There may be moments(down the road) when she is not. Her protector on this journey is the horse who must keep her safe from the dark souls who would come to steal her away. The owl is the ever watchful eye and alerts the horse to any dangers from beyond. He follows along on this journey as well.

I just found out abouit the challenge myself, so you are definitely not alone. You can do it..

I am very late entering the challenge but I came up with this idea. The story in this image takes place after a fierce battle. The enemy have gone but not before setting the forest on fire. The rider will be trapped unless she can convince her stallion to go forward through the flames. She raises her sword in defiance and cries to her trusted friend..Onward!

Thanks, I did the concept drawing this morning and I have been working on the final line drawing this afternoon.

Interesting concept, I would say go for it.
because of the flames surrounding them, I would have the horse standing on his backlegs raised vertically some more (I suddenly can't come up with the english term for this:D ) and show the fear and frustration on the womans face.
This could be great, good luck!

hi,i think u can intensify more on her expression as to convey how she convince her stallion to go through the flames~
best of luck debbie~http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I've updated several things with this image. This is my basic roadmap. May need to do a few things with perspective but hopefully I'll get to begin the coloring process tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments. I tried to get the horse in more of an upright position and am still working on the girl's expression. I'm struggling between confidence and fear for her.

hey there debbie. glad to see there are other late arrivals like myself. the difference from your rough sketch to line art is huge, and i look forward to seeing it colored. i hate following the trend of art forums, but you might want to check out some reference photos for your horse. this looks tough... you are gonna have to get the lighting right for all the aspects... well, i look forward to it. good luck.

I have few suggestions:
- maybe you could find another pose for the girl? it's not natural. when you ride a horse you never sit like this (she's saying: ok, I checked my hair, take the photo NOW!) :)
- watch the left edge of the image. it would be a strange composition if the tail touched that edge.
Keep going, there's no much time left :)

Hi and again thank you for your comments. I really appreciate your insight. This image is totally from my head. I'll have to look around 'quickly' and find a photo reference for the horse especially the hind feet. I am going to probably downsize the horse and girl to move them away from the paper's edge. As far as the girl's pose I'll work on that. Maybe she should be leaning into the horse in sort of a forward position. Looks like I'll have to resubmit my line drawing. I won't be able to get to this until this afternoon. So much to do so little time.lol
Have a great day everyone!

Yeah the woman leaning more forward was just what I was going to suggest, get the horse more vertically and the woman almost touching the horse's neck with her chin.
Shouldn't be to hard to find pictures of horses in that position, now stop wasting your time reading this and get to work;), good luck!

Lots of changes from the original. This seemed like a more emotional idea then the one before. The background is basically the same. Still working on a storyline for this one.

...and here is the line art. I'm trying to think positive that I will get this done.

Some darker areas will be lightened. I'm still adjusting my color scheme.

I wanted to add an owl to the image but this is it for now. I also have a storyline. Probably should have given it a different title but I guess afterward is appropriate... The girl on the horse is passing from this life to the next. The white horse is sad and weary of his burden (he has a job to do, which is carry the souls which have passed from this life onto the next.) The girl in the image is not sad or in anguish but merely at peace.

I am finished! I decided to add the owl and that is mostly all I've worked on today. I did add some more grass on the distant hill and a few scraggly plants. Storyline is updated. This story is about the journey into the afterlife. The time has come for Aeya to make the journey. She is the master as both the horse and the owl serve as her guardians on the way to paradise. It is the task of the horse to keep her safe from the dark souls and demons that inhabit this realm for they would come to steal her away if they could. The owl is the ever watchful eye. With a warning cry he flies ahead and with his keen vision searches through the darkness for the dark souls that lay in wait...
