Latest Update: Final Image: Rule in Hell or Serve in Heaven

This is the final combined image. It took me quite a long time to finish it, but finally I made it. :)

I remind you that the layout has a form of a book sleeve (so that the title falls over the spine of the book). So, each side will represent a different perspective of this saying.
I tried to pass to the viewer the characters' emotions through their expression, pose and general atmosphere as much as possible, but without being overactive.

(*Painted in Photoshop; no references or textures were used).

This project is entitled "Rule in Hell or Serve in Heaven". I was thinking about this for quite some time, and finally I came up with this subject, because I haven't seen a concept like that illustrated before, and because it also expresses a deeper philosophical dilema, apart from the common master/servant relation.
It will be comprised of two parts-scenes joined together (a human in the role of a master in hell and a human in the role of a servant in heaven), while the large tree in the middle will seperate the two images. I thought of the whole layoout as a book cover. So, the front and the back cover will represent the two opposite perspectives representing this philosophical question; while the tree in the middle will fall on the spine of the book. That's the basic layout concept. :)

This is the line art version of "Rule in Hell or Serve in Heaven". I only made some small changes from the previous concept scetch.
Note that I didn't or won't use any references such as photos, real models, texture maps, etc. for making this piece, because I want it to be a pure outcome of my imagination only.

Here's some work in progress when I started coloring. I chose red ambient light for the first theme and green for the second, in order to make some contrast. There's still a lot of corrections to be made.

I made heaven appear as a beautiful but misty place, in order to express the confusion in the captive angel's mind. Also, much attention has been paid to the angel's expression, sadness and discomfort and disturbance mixed together. I didn't want to put much detail in the background, as I wanted to focus the viewer's eye in the main theme.
No ready textures or other references were used during the coloring. Every one of the feathers', leaves' and the tree's textures are painted and shaded by hand one by one. This is pretty much the final version of the second part of my work.

That's the first part of my work. Attention has been paid to the expressions of the characters. Generally I created a dark mood, but placed a bright light in the foreground to show the euphoric feeling of domination.
Again, no references or other textures were used. Everything is painted.
This is close to the final version.
Now only the joining of the two images is left, plus some small corrections. :)
