View Full Version : NURBS, eh? I mean, y'know, help please?
Jonny Bubonic 02-15-2002, 06:35 PM Hello all. Looking for a bit of help in Nurbs modelling in Maya. I'm currently a low poly modeler/ texture artist, and I'm looking to expand my skills a bit. Just a general overview, any tips and simple techniques would be cool, before I wade into the manuals properly.
For example, how do most of you start modelling a head? Do you begin with a Nurbs primitive and manipulate it and add bits, or do you start from scratch with profile curves?
Any help/warnings/advice/links/sarcasm welcome.

either way is fine , i model the bulk of the head from a nurbs cylinder , than model the eyes , mouth , nose and ears seperately , and stitch them together after i am done.
if you go to Steven Stahlbergs website , there is a link for one oh his tutorials that shows how to model a nose. it'll be very helpful.
here is the url : www.optidigit.com
hope that helps

The only primitives I would use in modeling a head,
are MAYBE half a sphere, or cylinder, to make the lips,
but a revolve is usually better.
And spheres for the eyes,
everything else is best to just draw curves and generate surfaces from them, then tweak the surfaces into shape.
also, remember to rebuild all you're surfaces to 0to#spans
if using stitching.
On the extremely rare occasions I have to model something in NURBS I first model it in poly's then use a script to convert the key edge loops to nurbs curves, and then Bi-rail, loft, extrude, to turn those curves into a model. For me I found this is much quicker than trying to screw around with patches or nurbs primitives.

Cheers, guys. I'll try all three...but where can I get the script you mentioned Lyr? Is it something you wrote or can I download it from somewhere?
The script is on highend3d.com
