View Full Version : Pixel pusher phun (a mini challenge)

Hello everyone! It's time for another challenge. I'm sure Jeroentje agrees. ;)

This time, it's all about pixel art.
Here's the rules:
- Draw a scene or object in isometric pixel art style OR draw a character sprite.
- Pixel art means no anti-aliasing, and no gradients!
- Isometric view means you do not apply perspective!
- If you draw a character sprite, use at most 32 colours. No more! (Using cell shading is strongly recommended!)

Remember to save your work as GIF or PNG (JPEG is unfit for pixel art)!

For those who are unfamiliar with this kind of art, a few links:
http://www.pixeldeviant.com/graphics_pixels.shtml
http://www.eboy.com/
http://pixelation.swoo.net/

That's it, I guess. Good luck!

Yep, it was your idea...
It's allways interesting to do something you didn't do before, so I will just give it a try.

And you know the standard MINICHALLENGE guidelines by now:
- Be creative and make it look fantastic.
- Rules are not open for negotiation.
Cheers, Jeroentje

We would appreciate it if you could host your piece from a server.
For free hosting places check out www.tripod.lycos.co.uk , www.lycos.co.uk , www.fortunecity.com . (Links to) free upload software can be found there aswell and also at www.tucows.com. Or do a search in your favorite search engine. When attaching is your only option: so be it.

hmm interesting..... so using a program like "MS Paint" would be ideal for creating pixel art?

roel
10-10-2002, 05:40 AM
Well, just about any pixel-based program would do. Photoshop, MS Paint, good ol' Autodesk Animator... Does Painter have any drawing tools with hard edges?

DocBoom
10-10-2002, 08:45 AM
what about animation (animated gif :bounce: )?

roel
10-10-2002, 08:49 AM
Why not? nobody said you weren't allowed to animate it!

Great!!! Very good Roel!!!

I will stop to work on SpaceDuck a moment and Participate this little Challenge!!! Very gooooooooood !!! :bounce: :bounce:

Yet, I don't think restriction to 32 colors for a character is good...
A lot of Sprites have more now. But i will follow the rules. Just Harder!!! :D

Oh...And an other link for those who are unfamiliar with this kind of art

Sure, but then again, a lot of sprites still have less.
Capcom vs SNK 1 & 2: 16 colours.
King of Fighters (all versions): 16 colours.
Guilty Gear X: 32 colours.

And I should also note that one of these colours is transparent, which leaves only 15 or 31 colours for the actual image.

Yessss.....Guilty Gear X= Best sprite based fighting game EVER!! I'm going to join this challenge with a character heavily influenced by that game.

I am starting my entry now! :)

Is there any res limit roel? Because what I am proposing to create will be quite largeish (1280x1024) :)

Thanks. Oh and how long do we have?

I believe the forum rules say you shouldn't post anything larger than 800x600, but other than that, there's no limit.

Thanks. Oh and how long do we have?

There's nothing to win, so a time limit would be rather pointless, methinks. Just try not to keep everyone waiting for too long, i.e. post your work before this thread is old, and senile, and forgotten. ;)

This minichallenge is just for fun and for fun only. So there is no deadline, and all the "rules" are in the first 2 posts of his thread. The rest is up to you (too much rules is not good for a person).
This will stay stickied for about a week or two.

General forum posting rules can be found overhere: forum rules. (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20257)
If you want to post a big one anyway that is fine, just post only the link to your server (I mean the URL without the [IMG] tags) and we will all be able to see it without it conflicting with the forum layout ;)

edit - I am sorry for my early in the morning tone of voice in the first version of this post. ;)

I think I messed up a bit with the limited color thing. I remembered I made that silly font years ago, when playing around with fontographer. Never thought I would actually use it someday.

Hope you like it, it is my very first pixel thingy ever.
Cheers, jeroentje

roel

Jeroentje, you are a machine!

But why did you save your work in JPEG format? The shark, for example, has less than 16 colours, so GIF would have been a better choice. Lossless compression, and about 5 times smaller filesize in this particular case.

jeroentje
10-12-2002, 11:20 AM
Tried that, but gif seems to **** up the colors.
Btw, are we the only who finds this challenge amusing?

roel
10-12-2002, 12:25 PM
Messed up colours have nothing to do with the GIF format, but rather with an erroneous palette setting.

I seem to remember others saying they were interested in this challenge, but the number of entries seems indeed quite meager...

This will have to do until I get a chance to work on a new one. This image was created about 10 years ago when I was bored at work. Based upon a pencil sketch I did while studying the work of M C Escher in junior college Art History class. I call it "dogs" and it was created using MS Paint in Windows 3.0 ... :argh:

I only just noticed this thread! Reminds me of my old gaming days.

Jeroentje, may I ask what process you go through to draw these pics? I just had a go but found it really difficult to capture the features of a character. In fact, I always have.

Do you fill out the main shapes first, and then shade them?

Hope to see more!

Looking goooood guys... Jeroentje, methinks you're done this type of stuff before. Great work you have done :-)

I have been extremely busy and will try and have something up soon. If not, I'll post whenever.

Just wanted to ask some questions.
Docboom, animation rocks with pixel art. How do you, or anyone for that matter, get realistic movement or animation with pixel art?

I suck at anything "organic" looking in pixel art... its the one area I really need to work on. :)

Wonderful to see my 'lil old ps2 work started this, let's keep it going :)

as these are my first steps in animating and pixelart and animating pixelart, most of it contists of :thumbsdow very much :wip: , some  , some  , some  and a bit of :lightbulb . if i´m lucky it´s :applause: and i´m  .
hope this did help...

not?!?

ok, old skool sketching with pen and paper helps a lot. It´s far more easier if you have kind of a plan before pixelating. I guess i´ll try this next time, too...

My first post ever showcasing 2D art.
I had to contribute when you all started with pixel art.
This is old, but the last time I was into pixels was with Deluxe Paint.
Five colours.

http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/pics/Snowmonster.gif

(Maybe I should add that this is just a pixelated version of a drawing from a _very_ famous comic creator. Anyway, no scans or bullshit just used the pic as reference.)

Wow - very cool Mikael P!

I absolutely love Calvin & Hobbes... I copied the strips over and over again when I was younger (I never got Calvin's hair right). :D

Though I'd have a little crack at this - nothing fancy at all (I don't think I could do fancy if I wanted to anyway!), just this miserable little guy.

http://www.moonjam.com/cheerup.gif

I might make something more substantial that this - but I'm pretty damn lazy... :D

Mikael that brings back memories of reading Calvin and Hobbes. I always wished I lived where it snowed so I could build snowmen as morbid as he did! Maybe one day... :) Everyone is doing such awesome pixel artwork, makes me want to give it a shot.
