View Full Version : Snap tool when creating spline
paintbox 05-11-2005, 12:34 PM Hi all,
A question about snapping and splines. Is it possible to use the snap tool while creating a spline. I know that the attribute manager displays snap settings when I use the move tool, but what about when creating a spline ? I see no snap settings, and I'd like to use it right away instead of snapping every point afterwards...
Thanks for any reply !
PS I am using C4D XL 9.1

Yes, 9.1 added a shortcut for the new snaps palette which is available during spline creation. Check the addendum for the keys--I've changed mine so I don't know the default setting.

You can also put the snap commands anywhere you want (except radius). I have a snap menu on the view window.
You can use snap spline on polys to duplicate the Silo paint on mesh feature.

Hey Rang,
Would you mind expounding on this a lil bit? I've got the spline snapping
to the sphere as a test, but what then? How do I take it further?
Thanks for your time.

The basic idea is to wrap a series of splines around an object then add a Loft Nurbs.
I turn 3D Snap on and I use edge snap, but poly snap would work, or point snap too. Make sure the default construction plane snaps are off, and I usually increase the radius to 16.

On a curved surface the spline points will be on the surface but the spline's lines will disapear under the surface. Look at it in wireframe display. I don't think the Freehand spline will work, you have to go point by point for snap to work, then you can draw with the spline on the object, then add the loft nurbs. Another option is DiPainter which will work as a freehand drawing tool.

At first I wasn't able to replicate these steps. It's because you have to assign a shortcut in the command manager first, because there is none by default (in the list under snap pop-up) ... I assigned it SHIFT-P and made it a window...works perfectly ! Thanks very much all...!

This happens when you've created your own shortcuts which produces a file called c4d_shortcuts.res in your prefs folder. When you update the program this file is not overwritten so any new shortcuts Maxon add to the program do not appear and you have to do it manually. The only way to get them to appear automatically is by deleting c4d_shortcuts.res, but you will loose any customised shortcuts.

Thatīs nonsense and has nothing at all in common with the topology brush from Silo other than a snap on surface feature. Try to draw splines over a high res mesh to derive a low res mesh with good edgeloop flow with your spline/loftnurb method. Good luck!
