Started a new project: I'm going to model Captain America and I wanna use this model to create a normal mapped character. This is the start of the high poly model, a lot of work to do but I'd like to know other people opinions. Thanks for any help or suggestion.

Looks good! I'm not sure if the nipples are correct, and the obliques look to be slightly off.

Looks like it will make a good mesh for Captain America.

Here is an update, no big difference but I changed some little details here and there, worked on the chest and I modified the croch area. Only started the legs.

AoB: thanks for the suggestion about the lower back I modified that area.

I'm going to model the entire body to practice modelling and muscles definition and than I'll change the model adding accessories and clothes to make him looking like Captain America :)

The abdominals should wrap more around the body and the back muscles seem flat. OTherwise, it's a great start for cap.

Thanks Teyon, I was thinking the same things about the abdominal and the back, I should have time to work on this model in the next days and I'll post an update.

Long time without update, but now I have the time to work on this character.
I have completed the first pass on the body, still a lot of details to add(the head, boots, hands, shorts, etc), but anyway here it is:

hey that's looking good...
i think you should model him after the "Ultimates" series Captain America... with the combat boots and the chin straps, and without the wings on his mask - he looks hardcore this way :)

keep it up!

Sweet model, its coming along v.well, one sugestion tho, his ass seems to b abit flat from the view thats there, but i could be wrong??

Neox

nope i also think that his butt should get more volume ;)
also i think that you shouldn't break his leg :D
look at the direction of the upper leg and the direction of the lower leg, that looks quite painful :)

dpizzle: my plan was to do the classic version, but I like also the version that you posted, I'll choose one :)

AoB: I changed a little bit the butt and now you can see the side view for a better reference.

Neox: if I have understood well your suggestion the lower legs were turned wrong, I changed them to point out a little. Do you think it's ok now?

I have added the boots and the shorts, but I have to create the folds and other details.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

There's only one thing bugging me and that is his muscles, the ones with his nipples on. (Breast/chest muscle?) They seem so sharp.

I have almost completed the high poly version, it took a while but this is my first high poly :)
I have removed the nipples because usually they are not visible under the overalls.
The colors are just to see how it looks like :)

Now I'll work on the low poly and the details.

I changed a little bit the proportions here and there and I have also almost completed the low poly. I hope to have in unwrapped by tomorrow.

If I had to make a guess.. I'd say his thighs are just a *little* too big. Not positive though.. all my male models are cartoon characters. Looks very nice so far.. looking foward to a texture update : )

In the last few days I tried to create a decent normal map, but I'm having some trouble.I don't know why, but there are always errors when I try to generate the map(I'm using max7).I also tried to generate the map with separated pieces but nothing.I think that some images can explain better than words what I mean.

This is the low poly mesh:

the normal mapped version:

http://www.fiart.biz/temp/captainamerica/captainnormal.jpg
the normal map(without the wings):
http://www.fiart.biz/temp/captainamerica/bodynormalsmap.jpg

and some details to show the errors:
http://www.fiart.biz/temp/captainamerica/captainnormaldetails.jpg

I have mirrored only the lower boots, the gloves and the small wings in the mask.To avoid errors during the normal map generation I moved the mirrored parts outside the uv space like someone suggested in some thread on the forum.Any advice to solve these issues is really appreciated, thanks a lot.

he seems to be too stocky to be captain america. make his hips and thighs a bit smaller and maybe increase is height a bit. remember in addition to having increased strength, he also has increased agility too..

thanks for the suggestions and the reference.
I have a lot of images of captain america and he always looks different so I tried to find a compromise. For example these are some of the references:

http://www.fiart.biz/temp/captainamerica/captainreference.jpg

anyway I solved the most part of the problems with the normal map and started the texture(and added the shield). It's only a start and I wanna try also to refine the normal, probably using the photoshop plugin and painting the details.

I think the head is slightly too big, the knees a little too high and too far apart. Also Cap'n would have more developed obliques.

polyrancher: I think that the proportions issues you are talking about are cause by the perspective view because I have checked them.

I have rigged and posed him, my first attempt but I think it is not too bad :)
I still have to work a lot on the texture, but I wanted to post an update.
C&C welcome

The reason why the knee looks high (which i think it is) is because your boots arn't correct (matching the ortho sheet on your last post) They arn't that high...

Normals actually look quite good, and the pose... well looks like he trying to take a poo... hey nature calls for all super-heroes, big or small :)

Looks good dude, the face needs some work, and blah blah, good luck :)

Looking good :)

I think what is causing the normal map errors on the ends of the gloves and boots is the sharpness of the edge. It is best to try to avoid angles 90 degrees or below because this confuses things. Try beveling those edges so there are 2 angles of over 90 degrees instead of 1 angle that is under.

Hope this helps.

I'll post an image with the proportions highlighted, so you guys can check it.

Jason-Lavoie: is the pose so bad? come on, the poo.... :)

Lupus D'Scotia: you are right, thanks for the advice,it was really appreciated.

Blood Phoenix: thanks,I'll post an update soon. I'm waiting for my pen tablet that I forgot at home(now I'm in scotland, guest of a friend of mine)to finish the texture.Working with the mouse is so difficult when you used to paint with a tablet :)

Nice model.

In cases like this (boots and gloves) is not that hard to edit the normal map in photoshop...

Just paint that neutral blue tone over the strange read/green parts.

Or clone some of the good part of them over the bad parts.

It works. :)

Thanks Pedro! It's what I have done in some parts :)
I saw your Sin Tracker, it is amazing! Best of luck with the competition

I have worked the proportions again and I think that now he should be better, let me know what you think.

there is something about his face that seems off. It seems it needs to be a tinge narrower.

Also the diffuse maps, needs more pizzaz, like some leather-like texture for the boots, some scuff marks, the main blue suit needs some nylon texture, or something like that. Otherwise this cap is good.

CataFa

Update: about 60% texture done.

his legs are WAY too short, check against your ortho ref again, he needs much longer thighs and calves, he'll look quite good if you fix that.

Wayne Adams
06-19-2005, 04:43 AM
I'd have to agree with adam, he's very stumpy. But you are doing great justice to such an awesome, if not highly celebrated, character. I can't wait to see some poses

CataFa
06-19-2005, 10:57 AM
Thanks guys! I think that the perspective view is the problem. If you check one of my previous post you can see the front view and I think that he is not so short. I have changed some details from that view but the overall height is the same.I hope to complete the texture and do some poses today.
