Hi, I want to get some footage from multiple DVDs onto my computer for editing a compilation reel together. I do not have a video capture card.

I was hoping someone here could tell me what software I would need for these purposes. What would be the best option? And what codec I should export to for editing purposes. Uncompressed? It may be important to note that I intend on putting the footage back onto a DVD eventually.

Is there a software that will allow me to choose small clips while playing the DVD from my DVD-rom or do I have to convert an entire .VOB file to an AVI somehow?

id appreciate the help

thanks,..

Hi, perhaps this can help. I used this tool at work to do some dvd ripping. It allow me to rip a part of dvd with a specified timecode range, or by chapters.

Thanks toon shady this is exactly the type of thing I need, hopefully it doesn't get stumped by the CSS protection though.

Im not pirating the movies, just editing a montage of several 80s cartoons.

thanks again.

glad I can help. :) My job at one point was to rip short clips from variety of dvd movies and edit them for a video game pitch. The util was short of documentations, but did the job. And it was free when I used it.

a vote for TMPGEnc Express.

the trial download is at the bottom. I've found this tool to be absolutely perfect for extracting DVD video material.

that software seems to work quite well, thanks Rainier, now would you happen to know what a good program is for DVD authoring? With templates and stuff? :D

here is a very good list of many authoring tools, with reviews, opinions and information.
It also lists whether the software is freeware, has trial versions etc.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=2#2

Personally i use Adobe Encore (make sure it is at least version 1.5), However i only jumped to that because i'm familiar with adobe interface and layout etc.

I can't say i've had much experience with other authoring software, however if you are looking for something simplier and less expensive DVD-Lab and Ulead's DVD Authoring offering are easy and simple to use.

Check out that list, and i'm sure you will find what you are looking for.

Hey Mike :) Long time no see

You cannot make an uncompressed AVI out of a DVD (DVDs use MPEG2 format which is a compressed codec). Best bet is to rip the DVD or capture it using FRAPS (http://www.fraps.com/) or Virtuosa (http://www.virtuosa.com/) and encode those capture/rips as Uncompressed video... but keep in mind that the pixelation/playback rate will be that of the DVD

EDIT: Wait, I thought you had already captured the stuff you needed from your DVD :scream: What do you need exactly?

Dom whatsup man! Hows NYC?

Mpeg2 is just uneditable in Premiere, so I want to get it into a format where I can actually edit. Whatever format that may be.

I don't have a capture card.

So what software would be best for this? Actually I dont even need the audio. I just need to convert the DVD footage, or a VOB file into something that can be edited in Premiere. All I know for sure works in premiere is uncompressed AVI. But if I can't do that then whats the next best bet?

NYC is good brother... im loving it

Try the two links I gave you... try their demo versions (Fraps allows you 30 seconds, while virtuosa is full package good only for 30 days). Let us know how it goes

By the way, if you're ever in NYC, let me know man! We gotta hang out again for sure!
