a matte painting is , when you get different shots (photographs, 3d, etc) and combine elements from them to make a different scene.

search the net for scott pasco. he is one of the best matte painters , and there are detailed examples on his site. ( i cant remember the url now )

you'll get a much better descriptiion than i gave.

This isnt just an explanation, but nearer to a "How to" for becoming a matte painter. Its a great site i've checked in on from time to time for awhile now. If you have other specific questions feel free to email me. My link is on here.

thanks for the replies, but i really wanted to know was why they make that black and white "matte"thing seen on this link: http://www.iloura.com.au/the_making_of/the%20process.htm
I ve seen that they always do this procedure when inergrating CGI into live-action...Do you have to do that if you just want to insert a CGI thing into a single picture?

thats color keying , say you have a bluescreen footage , you key the blue out , that leaves you with a clean alpha channel (transparency) , for whatever your subject is.

check out composite toolkit at dv garage , for all your answers.
