View Full Version : Daily Sketch 338: PRODUCTION DESIGN: "Frankenstein's Monster"
RobertoOrtiz 05-09-2005, 01:24 PM I want to try an experiment for one week.
The idea is that a movie Title will be mentioned (Real or Fictional), and we will design
equipment, costumes and environments. As always we will have only a day.
Frankenstein's Monster (past, present, or future): Many of us could go nuts modeling the laboratory and props. If the production is set in the time period of the novel, there are several fabulous costumes that will be needed. If in the present, will need references to medical equipment. If it's in the future, all of the above works.

Hi Roberto.
Is character design part of this also? Or just equipment, costumes and environments?

So everything is in play.
From the castle, the costumes to the monster.

Oh yea, this is going to be too much fun. :bounce:
So, I think I'll spend my time playing with different looks/ideas for the monster. He's always been one of my favorites.
So, here's a first take on it. Before the brain has been acquired. :)

I suppose these are my first impressions of the Frankenstein story. Tried to steer clear of the usual green and purple dominants. Rather than an elaborate singular concept these are conceptual thumbs for varying environments. Each image is anywhere between 5-15 minutes.

Excellent. I have a bunch of Medical books here so will have a quick look through them to see if they inspire any ideas.
I think I'll stick all my designs (if I get more than one done) in the same post so that you can see how they all work together.
I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with for this theme.
(Edit: love all the work so far am going to stick my work in this post following this bit)
Here's a montage of some images I'm using for a bit of inspiration which all seem relevant.
http://www.tomclive.co.uk/FrankRefer.jpg
In case you're wondering about Jose Mourinho in there it's because of his skin colouring with the yellows and purples and John Kerry - well that's pretty obvious.
There seem to be a lot of creatures happening here so I might have a go at a laboratory.

OK, sorry but I'm getting a little confused. Are we supposed to be collaborating and making community decisions about time frame, place and style, etc.?
Or are we all just going our separate ways and doing our own thing based on the topic and seeing what everyone comes up with?
Edit: Just noticed after I posted this, same question as stepington above. I think its a do our own thing kind of thing and just see all the different takes on it that everyone does. Right?
Arkinet - Thanks. And your M&S entry rocks! I hope I can paint like that someday.

I'm not feeling well today, but since this was my idea, I figured that I had to submit something. Therefore, I present this story board page. I've chosen a more modern Frankenstein that needs to fix his comb over. (Anyone that obsessed with extending life has got to have aging issues.) Here, he has leaped to the table with a power cable that he has pulled from the ceiling, in the hopes that he will awaken his monster.

I think it took about two hours, but I can't really tell. I'm using Gimp. Now if you will pardon me, I'm going back to bed.

In the early 1800s, the United States Military fathomed a concept that only begged to be heresy. Little was spoken about the experimentation that occurred at West Point, and nothing was more secret than the outcome of them. After 1816, the clandestine operative was abandoned and the manuscripts archived in an unknown location.
Two hundred years later, Professor Victor Frankenstein finds himself with crates of information that he accidently comes across as he mistakenly produces a hole in the wall of his laboratory at Miskatonic University. Plagued with an obsession of his lost love, he had always vowed to never see another heart disappear in his grasp. And here, with this treasure at his bidding and a noble assistant by the name of Robert Walton, Frankenstein's life begins... and will never end.
A vague outline with encryptions and of a cylinder vessel that contains a grayish green liquid sludge, with a top and bottom that presents a magnetic field. The fluid-like suspensions of nanoparticles, magneto-rheological fluids (MR), is said in the documentation to harness the creation of a new generation of flexible body armor when placed on the Materilizer (right object). These MR fluids are noted to create a flexible armor system that was capable of instantly hardening when hit by a musket round or cannon shrapnel.
http://img43.echo.cx/img43/9316/genecks0aw.jpg
In one of the crates, Frankenstein finds moth-eaten overalls with a rusted alloy "box" where a chest would hide behind. There were threaded holes in it where it appeared that heater cores were attached. It is noted that this is what was worn by a former soldier of the War of 1812... the clothing he wore when he was brought "back to the living world". Assistant Walton sketches and paints for Prof. Frankenstein of what it may have appeared 200 years ago.
http://img43.echo.cx/img43/2030/bdaysuit2fh.jpg
Frankenstein draws up plans based on the manuscripts and sends Walton out on a "gathering". Where the US Goverment failed, Victor Frankenstein shall prevail...........
(Photoshop/paper/pencil/Berol color pencil--Total time: 3 hrs... I know... I shouldn't really put stuff up here unless it's under an hour, but this is fun!)

Hey Fabian, nice sketch but it's in the rules that images should be under certain dimensions. ( Think it's 800x600 ! )
Also if you're going to post the development of a single picture I think it's best to edit your original post.
Thany - that concept looks great and the clouds look excellent. I was going to point out the perspective thing with consistency issues between bridge and castle but it looks as though you've already spotted it.

Hey guys! Just a quick sketch from me on this un!
This is Frankie Stein. He is a pocket sized monster. A prototype.
Doctor Frankenstein was in fact afraid of Thunderstorms, so he used to hide in the basement and create little Life-toys. Instead of being brought to life by the un-tamed ferocity of lightning, which he was so afraid of, Frankie is merely powered by the AA Battery strapped to his back...
Kind of like a gothic Duracell bunny...
Hope you like him... He only wants to be your friend...
http://img12.echo.cx/img12/4851/frankie5hi.jpg
I would like to develop him a bit more so I shall say watch this space...

05-11-2005, 05:52 PM
arkinet - Thanks. I'm not sure if I completely understand your question, but I think each of these topics are still just supposed to be a daily sketch like usual, The topic is just structured, so you can approach it from any angle you want in terms of production design. Seems most people have moved on to the the other topics. I just can't stop working on this one because I like it so much
.:ZRDwD:.
05-11-2005, 06:12 PM
Same here.
I'm no good with set design, and that seems to be the biggest production design there is. I'd rather go for f/x design, such as for characters.
I'll stick to this topic for the remainder of the week, more focused on the design and concepts of the Monster. Started an outline sketch before heading to bed last night, think I'll fill in that silhouette tonight. :)

This is what occurs when you inject a living being with Colloidal Silver then submerged the body into the greyish green magneto-rheological fluid, later applying a lightweight liquid polymer (NTEC-49) to sustain the electroactivity of therein. The combination of the CS and MR reacts in a way to the magnetic Materializer that dissolves the bacterial ridden skin and tears the flesh until it hardens and the bones crystalizing to an alloy, making it impenetrable.
Frankenstein exclaims later to Walton, "I do not know what God felt like when he created Man and Woman... but I do know what it feels like to create God...."
