Hey dude I am facing exactly the same problem. After installing sp-1 I get faced (unsmoothed) renders of my textures. I looked closely at my materials in mat. edit and it seems that max turns on the faceted option in the materials. at the moment I solve it by going into each material (a hell lot of them) and checking and instantly unchecking the faceted option, then they're smooth till max is upset with me, whoever knows why, and turns them to faceted again. Damn that really really sucks damn hard, sorry but I am f***ing annoyed

anyone knows a better way to solve this ???
I'll apreciate any help regarding this mess :D

Best regards,
Leon

nope, after SP1 i have the same shit, and i do the same, check and uncheck the faceted thing on the material slot. is a pain in the ass. well, at least im not the only one experimenting that problem.

Yeah cool, let's found a club :D
No, seriously they need to fix that, it completely destroys my workflow. I even thought about deinstalling sp-1 and the ext. :scream:

I am not sure about this but i noticed such problem only in viewport.. It was always related (at least in my few cases) to the fact that i worked at sub obj level and left some sub obj selected before jumping to another obj...

I repeat, not a "serious" test done..

Daniel.

With me the funny thing is that in my viewports everything is smooth, but the render is screwed up. This faceted thing though does only happen to max standard materials, Brazil's materials render just fine. But I don't wanna turn every single mat. into a brazil mat. this problem is just wicked

yeh, i have noticed that with final render it doesent happen, but when i change the material or change to scan line my view port, my render and my material slots get faceted. probably re installing will solve the problem, it seems that is not a really popular problem ... no other max users have reported this, and this was the first post about it (i think)

be patient, Autodesk M&E is aware of the probelem and working fullforce towards a solution.
check the Autodesk M&E support forums for more info

I have experienced no such problem. Is this only when you are using certain smoothing techniques or no UV mapping applied?
Also, is the problem visible when rendering with MR?

it has happened to me either using meshsmooth or turbo smoth. It doesent happen all the time, thats why i never post anything untill now. it has happend with a model that was mapped and with primitives as well...i havent tryed with mental ray, ill check it out..

I've only rendered, I think, in mental ray and final render since I switched. That could be why I haven't noticed anything.
I'm also using custom display drivers (maxtreme7) so that may 'fix' the viewport problems you are noticing. I don't know.
Of course, the maxtreme drivers come with their own set of problems.

I encountered this problem with Brazil, but not scanline. How strange. Well, i fixed it by uninstalling the VIZ extension.

I had this problem, too. I have a cebas plugin bundle installed and was just on their forums looking for a solution to a different problem and came across this...

"...under MAX 7.5, we could not reproduce the faceting error that had been reported. Out of a pretty thin theory, I rolled back the cebas.dlu to the slightly older one on my machine and discovered that I could quickly get the faceting to occur regardless of which cebas plug-in was installed. So it turns out that the most plausible theory surrounding the faceting under 7.5 is a slightly out of date cebas.dlu file."

Seems the cebas.dlu is a cause of faceted renders, too. I downloaded and installed their fix and everything seems to be fine now. Hope this helps! Download Cebas's fix here:

Yes ... it id definitely the Cebas.dlu

In the Company i work for they have finalrender and Thinking particles .. we had the same prob like you guys...then we.. step after step.. installed and deinstalled all plugs one by one...as soon the cebas.dlu is in the system the "facmapping" starts.

So i think autodesk isn't the real troublemaker.... it is cebas... but i never heard before, that a plugin could "infect" the renderer.

Darn.....! :(

Just found the fix.... thanks man.... good work

I had this problem too.
I just uninstalled the VIZ update, then re-installed SP1 and all seems well again.
You'll probably need your Max 7 install disk to do this, though. SP1 had a problem re-installing, and asked for it.

(whoops, should have read to the end, to see the cebas connection)

It worked, nice. :) Never thought the cebas.dlu is causing this trouble though... :surprised

thanks guys, am glad I found the thread, that issue was a real pain in the A, especially as indeed it wasn't happening all the time...sometimes faceted...sometimes not.... drove me crazy for a few hours yesterday.
