There are two ways to attach a SubD.

1. Using the SubD attach
2. A manually method.

Manual attach (attaching a subD to itself)

Proxy mode- delete any faces.
Position geometry together
Use Point Snapping (V) to match up the vertices

Once geometry lines up, pick walk down and delete the subDiv surface. (a polygon cage will remain).

Combine both polygons together using Combine. Build a SubDiv from those polygons.

To fix any edges, go to Proxy mode, then go to edit polys – merge edges to fix.

SubDiv’s attach command
(i.e. Attaching an arm to torso.)

Delete any faces needed in proxy mode to make a hole.
Duplicate geometry.
Go into proxy mode and delete un-needed faces of the geometry duplicated.
Hierarchy mode- position geometry properly
Proxy mode- point snap vertices, make sure both SubDivs have the SAME AMOUNT of EDGES in Proxy mode. Point snap (V) all vertices to line up the edges.
Hierarchy mode- select both SubDivs and attach.
Reassign any shaders.

If you don’t have the same number of edges to attach, select edges and either go finer or coarser, or use the manual attach method. Proceeding without the same edges in proxy mode will not have correct results.

Cure for subdivision SLOWNESS

1.) Open the Hypergraph. Options > Display > Shape Nodes.

2.) Select the shape node for your SubD model , and "show up-and-downstream connections".

3.) Right-mouse over your SubD model in the viewport and go to Poly Proxy mode.

4.) In the Hypergraph, you should see the downstream connections change to a historyshape node (the
poly proxy) and a bunch of blindData nodes.

5.) Delete the blindData nodes. If you move vertices on your model, you should already see a slight
increase in speed.

6.) Create two layers.

7.) Select and assign the the poly proxy (historyShape) and the subd shape node to seperate layers.

8.) Hide the layer with the Subd shape node

9.) Middle mouse drag the Poly Proxy (historyShape) node over the shading group (at the right end of the
network in the hypergraph) to give it a material, so it is shaded in the viewport.

10.) Now move some vertices on your poly proxy and you should have full interactivity! You can hide
and show both layers whenever you want. (Note that the greatest performance increase comes from
hiding the SubD layer.)

You can also bind the poly proxy to a skeleton and animate it. That way you can alter and assign UVs on
the SubD model after the poly proxy is skinned. When you want to render, just hide the poly proxy and
show the subd! Walla!

Hopefully this will work for everyone. If it doesn't and you have questions, post them. I'll try to solve
them. Note that you must repeat the steps concerning the Poly Proxy node if you switch back to standard
mode and then back to Poly Proxy node (deleting blindData nodes, assigning to the layer and assigning a
shading group, etc).

how to model tubes/pipes ?

1. create two concentric NURBs circles
2. create a locator and snap it into the center of the smaller
circle (inside)
3. create CV/EP-curve and snap it's starting point directly onto
the center of the locator
4. draw curve like you want the pipes to flow
5. select circles and curve
6. 'surfaces->extrude'
7. use 'edit curves-> add points' to continue pipe-extrusion in
real-time
8. 'edit curves->rebuild curve' to make the extrusion as smooth
as possible
9. 'edit curves->smooth curve' to finally smooth out your pipe

Just want to raise a big warning flag about the above step:

When a subd is in poly proxy mode the blindData nodes are there for a good reason - they store the hierarchical tweaks and creasing information from the native subd, which allows the subd to be recreated from just the poly and it's blind data when saved and reloaded. It is ok to delete the blind data nodes under only two conditions, either you do not have any hierarchical edits or creases on the native subd or, if you do, you go back into standard mode before you save your scene. If you delete the blindData nodes and then save your scene with the subd still in proxy mode, you will lose all your hierarchical edits and creases.

Problem :
- Mental ray rendering give weird black spots in variabel places when using final gather.
- MR transparancy problem when using final gather on objects and/or image planes near the fg sources in outdoor scens.

I could do a "render frame" and it looked great, but when I tried to do a batch render, Maya just hung.

in maya 6.5 , when I'm in edge selection mode, I select 2 edges , activate the move tool , and I try to rotate the camera then the program crashes !

dunno why nobody is answering that question..
personally i would reinstall or update the drivers for my graphic card. if that does not help i would reinstall maya. but i guess u must have already solved the poblem by now.

no it's not solved yet, I reinstalled every thing even windows , updated my vga driver , and still the problem persists,


can u try to do the same and see if it will crash?

on any polygonal object , get into edge selection mode, select 2 edges , activate the move tool , then rotate the camera , and see if it will crash or not

for me I'm still looking for a solution :'(

did what u asked to do. no, maya is not crashing. have no idea whats going on with ur machine. hav u tried other forums? also try other threads on this forum. looks like nobody reads the Maya FAQ forum nowadays.

have you tried updating ur old vga drivers with new ones. if u do a search on this forum u will find that sum ati cards have little problems when running Maya. maybe thats where ur problem lies.

Can't turn on (or off) motion blur in Render Globals :

defaultRenderGlobals.motionBlur -l 0;

That's a L in -l (as in Lock), not a one. I have this on my render shelf permanently, our boxes do it a lot.

First reason:
You have not enough RAM. Minimum value should be 512 MB, recomended >1024 MB
Second reason is your old Ati card with very old single channel DDR memory [one stream 32 bit]. You don't have to buy highend 3D monster like 3D Blaster or nevest Ati X series or top Nvidia 7x models. For comfortable work enough'll be Radeon 9700 or Nvidia GF 4 Ti with 128 Mb dual channel DDR [focus at 128 bit modules], the best choice is ofcourse graphic adapter with GDDR3 fast [800~1080Mhz] 256 bit memory.

When your maya'll crash: UV editor [expect it every time you assign *psd map to your object, almost every operation with mentioned file format:]

Next, when you assign *.psd map simple 2D/3D projection to your defaul shader and you hit reload texture button.

Next, when you'll try to work with low poly sub object for uv mapping of high poly model.

e.t.c. Expect that Maya 'll crash every 5 miutes:) with your acctuall hardware config.

Hi, I'm using Maya 6.0 Unlimited. I have a problem with subdiv surface. First, I creat a subdiv cylinder. Then I delete the top and bottom set of faces. The problem is when I change from standard to polygon mode, my surface loses its subdivision along the height and width. Can any one know how to fix the problem? Thanks in advance.

I've been looking for a while now and I can't find the answer to my problem, and time is a bit of an issue. So if anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

Basically, when I move around in perspective vies my image planes disappear.
When I move around in orphographic view they just blur.

How do I stop it from doing this?

When i playblast it, there is an error:invalid compression type with the option ticked movieplayer. It works with image viewer though. How can it be solved such that it can be played with movieplayer?

Q: When I apply Maya's fur to my well unwrapped character I get some bald spots around the areas where the UV's are quite dense (eg. eyes, fingers, ears). How can I get an equally spaced fur over my whole caracter?

May not be what you're looking for, but in my experience its better to just produce a playblast frame sequence and then watch them in fcheck. I'm sure I'm just not using the movieplayer function right, but in my experience (and the experience of my cohorts) movieplayer just seems to not work very often or produces crappy results.

I have more 2 problems to solve... (day of repair)



1. After I choose in Extrude, I can't see the move + scale :

2. I've got... choose in set defaut in Preferences, and now when I create a new poly or Nurbs, I can't find the Inputs in Channel Box.

I am not sure why this happens but

1. press "T", perhaps the handle shows up
2. perhaps it has something to do with the interactive creation which is turned on by default.
Go into the modify->polygons-menue. Turn off "interactive creation" and try again

you probably have construction history turned off... if you see a little scroll with a red X through it in the upper menu bar then that's the problem (top 10 user error) ;-)

i have Maya 2009 Unlimited (Student Version, but full) for my MBPro (late 2008). out of nowhere, whenever i Select anything - Faces, Vertex, Edge - in any way as a Poly, NURBS, whatever, suddenly the Selected will include the space or item next to it or in a cooresponding location on it!:wip:

EX: if i Sel a Face on a cube (or any Shape), the Face next to it is now selected as well even though i did not do that; same goes for an Edge or Vertex Selection. now i can't complete my Models in any way!:sad: this did not happen until i used a Duplicate/Duplicate Special a few times.

now every Scene or project i try to start has this same technical burp that makes it impossible for me to even start a Model. i can't get through to anyone human at Autodesk nor any occurrences listed in the Forums, not even here.

Can anyone, pleae, help me?!?!?!?:shrug:

Yes it is , I've still got every previous version installed till Maya 7.0 , in case I need to work on archived projects again. I found that maya scenes isn't always forwards compatible - especially with very old scenes.

I found an old Maya 4 PLE disc that I got from a friend a long time ago, and I want to install on a desktop I have (it's an old P4 from 2001, but I've been slowly upgrading a few parts over the years). The problem is, I cannot get a password to install it because the Alias website now redirects to the Autodesk website.

I'm doubting Autodesk will be able to provide me with a password. So I thought I'd ask if anyone knew what it was?

Not sure what youre trying to achive so its hard to give tips, but from the top of my head you could either use:

#Sculpt mesh tool available in one of the Mesh menues and select "smooth" and paint away

#you could remove the "Keep component spacing" (i think its called) in movement tool, activate the grid and just move it to grid using only one of the axis on the gizmo. Itll snap all the vertecies to the same grid point, but be sure to use only one of the axis or it will snap all vertecies youve selected to a single point in the world.

#Select the vertecies you want to smooth and Average Vertecies/vertex available in SHIFT RMB (Sorry, at work and dont have maya infront of me, could be CTRL RMB)

Question about the cut faces tool. I'm trying to cut a space for the wheels on my car using this tool. I'm trying to cut it from the side, by viewing my blueprint. When i cut it, my side is fine, from where i cut it, but the opposite side is wider. I'm talking about the lines. Any help here?

How can I disable uv piece snapping/jumping? If I try to overlap or move close one piece to another it will jump back and it has become very annoying when it does that.

so, i would like to know if exists in the trial version some resources as occlusion renders with mental ray, material editor as hypershade, lightning tools, and if i can take big renders something between 2k to 4k per image.

I have a odd issue with Maya. I imported geometry form MODO, exported with FBX. I have done this before, and things worked fine. Now i am trying to do it again, and i am not able to see the geometry. I go to the outliner, and press A to get a view of the object, and i might see it for a second, and then it goes away. Its too fast to click on it. Im just wondering how do i get the geometry to import into Maya via FBX and use it like i used to. Thanks!

Change your camera clip planes to something larger or scale the model down.

Thanks for your reply! The problem was that when I imported in the model, the scale was too large. I also found out that in the perspective view, the visibility is cut off at a certian distance. It seems that when looking through the camera, this is not an issue. Anyways, I am happy that I can continue my work and have faith in the modo+ Maya connection. Thanks!

Thats what i mean by the camera clip planes. if you select the camera and open the attribute editor. in amongst the attributes you will see references to near clip and far clip. if you make them both larger you will see your model without clipping. this is probably the best way rather than scaling as your model will stay at the right scale (1:1).

I am sorry for my English, but I try to explain my problem with saving file in Maya.
I just finished my character modeling and disided to save the file. I saved this , but in that time Maya was closed and I think my file did not saved. But I know that there was Incremental Saves ( I saved often) and when I opened my last saved file, I noticed that only part of geomenty was in the scene. I looked at all folders of Incremental Save and all files ther were broken. ( only part of geomenty was there, not my last model)

Is some way to restore my last file? with my finished character model?

I hope you understand my question..

Until now i was using maya & max "2009" which is quite stable & bugfree version but now i want to use some latest version so which one is better 2011 or 2012 in terms of stability,plugins availability & features? which maya version prefered in film studios

Hello,

I have tried to find the Maya Personal Learning Edition.

I downloaded the trail version in the hope i would be given the choise between trail or PLE
but that was not so.
Is there a place where I can stil download the PLE?
