how do you render out from A FX with sound compression, i see i can compress video but looking at the sound-
output module- audio output - format options is ghosted so you cannot click on it to use sound compression

video output- format options is fine, i click on that and select my compresion format and away i go, but in sound you cannot select it and use some compression format, what gives, why the option but i cant select it to use sound compression.
i use after FX 4.1 by the way

You can't do anything about that - AE will only allow compressed audio for certain Quicktime CoDecs and even then your options are limited. It won't allow compressed audio on AVIs and several other formats. That hasn't changed even in newer versions. If you need more options, get Quicktime Pro or Soundforge or any other tool. There's enough out there that will allow you to add and modify audio tracks without having to render anything - they simply will create a new stream in the Quicktime or AVI container.

You can mux the video and audio in virtualdubmod (for avi, mkv, ogm...) too

Can't recall exactly (we rarely need compound audio/ video files and then we use other tools), but if you open an AVI in Soundforge and then save it again it should ask you if you want to save it with an empty audio stream, no audio at all or if you want to attach a specific file. But you may be right, this could only be valid for uncompressed sound. Anyway, a quick search on "merge audio and video" on Google turned up a plethora of potentially useful tools, I'm sure you'll find something there.
