seriously! it's amazing how hard they are to find, the manual covers only the BASICS it seems, and my mastering maya 3 book covers some basic stuff to... i gues sit's just horribly time onsuming..I just spent almost 8 hours making a map for my character, and I STILL am not done...there must be some trick!

as long as your character body parts all have the same UV sets (ie the head is all one UV set) you can use a cylindrical image map and save yourself the hours of painful UV reconstruction! There is a great tut on how to unwrap in the Maya 2 character animation book, that ive been meaning to scan.....ill post it when i get a chance to scan it ok :)

thats a character im working on now, and it uses that same technique, i didnt have to even touch the UV editor :)
